    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the lowering of strength and the breakage of a tool by forming the tool for friction joining, in which the bar-like tool composed of substantially harder material than that of a materials to be welded is inserted while rotating into the joining parts of the materials to be welded and the joining is executed by shifting the joining surfaces, as hollow shape and joining while passing coolant through the hollow part. SOLUTION: The materials to be worked are butted and joined by shifting the tool 1 while rotating along the butted surfaces. At this time, since the friction heat is generated between the tool 1 and the materials to be worked, the temp. of the tool 1 is raised. The material of the tool 1 uses the harder metal than that of the material to be worked, but the strength of this metal is lowered according to the rising of the temp. Since, when the temp. of the tool is raised, the tool 1 is broken at the time of lowering of the strength below the limitation bearable to the friction force, the tool 1 is constituted with a large diameter shoulder part 2 and a small diameter pin 3 at the tip part on the tool 1 and the inner part of the shoulder part 2 is formed as the hollow state, and the tool 1 is cooled by passing the coolant through the hollow part. As the coolant, air or water, etc., is used.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a friction welding method without a generation of unwelded parts by installing a grooved backing plate on the reverse face of a workpiece right under a tool, which is inserted to the welded part of the workpiece and moves while rotating. SOLUTION: A groove 7 made on a backing plate 2 is placed right under a welding face 3 of the workpiece 1, and welding is performed while a tip 4a of a tool 4 is inserted until it penetrates the reverse face of the workpiece 1. In this welding method, a part of the workpiece 1 is plastic flowed to the groove 7 made on the backing plate 2. During the welding processing, since the welding surface is being plastic flowed by the pressure of the tool 4, when the groove 7 is filled with metal, the metal on the welding part surface is decreased to make a concave form. The metal, which is to fill the groove 7, is supplemented by forming a projection 8 on the welding surface in advance. The tip 4a of the tool 4 is preferred to be welded while moving in the groove 7 of the backing plate 2. In this way, the overall of the welding part is fused are eliminates unwelded parts by deleting the backing waves.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a joining method which is drastically changed in the load of a tool by changing of contact areas between the tool and work pieces when the depth of the tool changes and the tool adequate for performing this method.
      SOLUTION: The friction agitation joining method comprises joining the work pieces by pressing and inserting the joining tool consisting of the material harder than the material of the work pieces into the junction of the work pieces while rotating the tool, in which the joining tool comprises a shoulder 3 of a large diameter and a pin 2 of a small diameter and is so formed as to have a slope 5 inclined with the surfaces of the work pieces on the outer peripheral side at the end face of the shoulder 3 coming into contact with the work pieces. The work pieces are joined by using such tool, by which the contact areas with the work pieces are changed when the depth of the tool changes and therefore the load of the tool changes drastically. The good joining is therefore accomplished by controlling the depth of the tool in such a manner that the load of the tool is kept constant.
