    • Flat panel image sensor (10) is provided by combining photoconductive imaging electrodes of a vidicon with a two-dimensional array of cold cathode field emitters (14) commonly used for flat panel field emission display (FED) systems. The FED operates normally to emit electrons which are accelerated in prior art displays towards a luminescent phosphor to generate light output proportional to the cathode emission. Rather than accelerating towards a phosphor, electrons are accelerated towards a photoconductor layer (16) to replace charge removed from the layer by an incident radiation pattern directed at the photoconductor layer (16) through a layer of transparent, electrically-conducting material (17) which serves as a radiation window. The transparent, electrically-conducting layer (17) may be partitioned to reduce stray capacitance for large area sensors and the partitioned, electrically-conducting layer (17) permits a parallel readout mode of operation.

    • A circular scan streak tube system (10) for recording fast optical data includes a target (30) having a first array of detection elements (32) and a second array of corresponding storage elements (34). Changes in the scanning electron beam current representing optical events are detected and stored in the first array (32). The first and second arrays are segmented into two halves for continuous operation. Data stored in one half of the first array are transferred into the corresponding storage elements while data are written into the other half of the first array. Data stored in the first array are transferred in parallel to the second array. After a triggering event, the data are shifted circumferentially through the second array for output as serial data. The target is formed in a unitary planar semiconductor substrate (70) having a buried channel (72) for storing and conducting electric charge representing the stored data.

    • Deleterious effects of high capacitance in large area, raster scanner image tubes, especially when employed in video cameras, can be overcome by employing the following features: 1) a plurality of transparent stripe signal electrodes (304, Fig. 3); 2) a unique, multiple layer, solid state structure designed to provide a Displaced Electron Layer-Sensor-Target for imaging (hereinafter DELST) (602, Fig. 6) with and without; 3) photoconductive gain in the DELST structure; and 4) with and without intensifier gain in the DELST structure, the proper combination of these four features makes possible the construction of video sensor devices of extraordinarly large capacitance, having rasters generated by "low or high" velocity scanning electron beams, or a laser scanning ray. The invention provides a generic approach for the selection of features and their combination with the type of scanner best suited to any one application. The choice is dependent upon system requirements such as speed, spacial resolution, dynamic range, sensor-target size and cost.
