    • An apparatus (10) for adjusting the air-fuel ratio of a fuel mixture to be supplied to an engine. The apparatus (10) has a needle valve body (18) and a receptacle (12) formed in a main body of a carburetor which receives the needle valve body. The needle valve body (18) has a needle and a head (28). The needle is axially movable relative to a needle orifice (34). The needle may be axially advanced and retracted by rotating the needle valve body (18) within the receptacle (12) to respectively decrease and increase the flow of the fuel mixture around the needle and through the orifice (34). To prevent tampering with the needle valve body setting, the head (28) of the needle valve body has an unconventional shape requiring a specialized tool to rotatably adjust the needle valve body (18). To further prevent tampering, the head is recessed with the main body of the carburetor. A generally annular retainer (46) is disposed concentrically on the needle valve body and laterally biases the needle valve body into engagement with the receptacle to maintain alignment of the needle valve body (18) relative to the receptacle (12). The retainer (46) assures that a constant fuel calibration setting is maintained through the orifice (34) by resisting needle displacement due to such factors as external forces applied to the head (28) of the needle valve body (18) or engine vibration.

    • A carburetor (10) for an internal combustion engine including a body (12) having an air inlet (14) and air outlet (16). A throat (18) is disposed in the body (12) between the air inlet (14) and outlet (16). A slide assembly (20) is movably disposed in the body (12) for crosswise movement across the throat (18). The slide assembly (20) includes a stepped portion (38) upstream of the throat (18) and the lower portion of the air inlet (14) is narrowed for concentrating and compressing the air entering the throat (18). A reservoir (24) containing fuel is attached to the body (12). The fuel reservoir (24) includes a fuel outlet (30) located in the throat (18). An adjustable metering rod (26) extends through the slide assembly (20) and throat (18) into the fuel reservoir (24).

    • A carburetor fuel mixture adjustment assembly has a threadable holder which suppresses rotation of a needle valve body disposed within an elongated receptacle defined within a carburetor body. The threadable holder is rigidly engaged within a threading chamber of the receptacle. During assembly, the needle valve body is extended through a bore of the holder as a threading portion of the valve body rotateable cuts an interior threading groove into the threadable holder. The threadable holder is held rigidly within the threading chamber by the carburetor body. A sealing holder is disposed within the receptacle axially inward of the threadable holder and is prevented from rotating within the receptacle by the threadable holder. A stem holder portion of the sealing holder assures a needle portion of the needle valve assembly remains concentrically disposed within an outlet orifice of a fuel chamber of the receptacle. A shank holder portion of the sealing holder engages radially between a shank chamber wall of the carburetor, which axially defines a shank chamber of the receptacle, and the shank portion of the needle valve body disposed concentrically to and axially inward of the threading portion. Engagement of the shank holder portion prevents air from entering through the receptacle and into the sub-atmospheric fuel chamber, thereby assuring stable fuel flow through a fuel passage intersected by the fuel chamber and stable engine operation.
