    • An aqueous-based wellbore fluid comprising:
      - an aqueous base fluid having a first level of salinity; and
      - at least one polymer dissolved in said aqueous base fluid at a concentration of at least 1.0g/l, said polymer (i) having a viscosity average molecular weight in the range of from 20,000 to 900,000; and (ii) having a molecular structure such that the polymer chains dissolved in said wellbore fluid adopt a globular conformation, while in a fluid of a second level of salinity, said second level being a lower level of salinity than said first level, the polymer chains adopt an extended conformation. The fluid of the invention finds utility in method of carrying out a wellbore operation, which includes the steps of:
      (a) introducing into a wellbore a novel aqueous-based wellbore fluid according to the invention; (b) allowing a filter-cake including said polymer in globular conformation to form; and subsequently (c) bringing a second fluid into contact with the filter-cake, said second fluid having a level of salinity which is lower than the level of salinity of said aqueous base fluid such that said polymer chains in said filter-cake adopt an extended conformation, thereby increasing the permeability of said filter-cake.
