    • A reach-adjustable lever assembly (12,14) mounted to a handlebar (20) for actuating one of a gear-change and braking device. The lever assembly (12,14) generally including a support member, a lever (24,34) pivotably connected to the support member and a reach adjust mechanism (16). The reach adjust mechanism (16) includes a follower (56), a cam (58) and a cam seat (60) for retaining the cam (58) in a current user-selectable position. The follower (56) is fixedly supported on one of the support member and the lever (24,34) and the cam (58) is rotatably supported on the other of the support member and the lever (24,34). The cam (58) has a plurality of user-selectable positions. The lever (24,34) is rotatably biased toward a rest position to position the cam (58) against the follower (56). The cam (58) and the follower (56) are configured to provide a different rest position of the lever (24,34) for each of the user-selectable positions.

Rotation of the adjusting member (180A, 180B) therefore adjusts the angle and position of the brake shoe (44A, 44B) relative to the brake arm.

    • A mechanical force enhancement device (10) which both amplifies an input force to produce a larger output force while also reducing the speed of an output member during the latter part of the output stroke. The device (10) employs a sequential pivoting operation which is capable of providing the above results while being uncomplicated in its design and construction. The device (10) includes a housing (12) having a pair of spaced-apart camming plates (40). Each camming plate (40) has a pair of opposing camming contours (42,43) formed therein so as to define two sets of spaced-apart camming contours (42,43). At one end of each camming contour is a recess (44,46) so as to define two sets of spaced-apart recesses (44,46). A linkage member (20) is disposed between the camming plates (40) and includes a driven end (36) adjacent one of the sets of spaced-apart camming contours (42) and a driving end (38) adjacent the other set of spaced-apart camming contours (43). The linkage member (20) also includes a pair of camming members (28,32), each of which engages a corresponding one of the sets of spaced-apart camming contours (42,43). The camming members (28,32) are able to engage their respective recesses (44,46) only when the other camming member (28,32) is engaged with its respective camming contours (42,43). A stroking device (14) is engaged with the driven end (36) of the linkage member (20) and a rod (18) is engaged with the driving end (38) to reciprocate relative to the housing (12).
