    • A document reading device (1) comprises: a camera (3) for taking an image of an information recorded surface of a passport (P) on which information that can be read through use of light of a predetermined reading wavelength is recorded; an illumination unit (4) for providing illumination of the reading wavelength toward the information recorded surface; an LED (8) for emitting detecting light for the passport (P) from a back of the information recorded surface, the detecting light being of a detecting wavelength different from the reading wavelength; and a control unit (9) for controlling document detection by the camera (3) and light emission by the LED (8). The document reading device (1) detects that the passport (P) is in place based on a brightness level of the detecting light from the LED (8) at the time of imaging. The detecting light emission from the LED (8) is controlled to turn off once the document is successfully detected. In this way, a document reading device of a simple construction capable of detecting a passport is provided.

    • An image processing apparatus which includes an image reading apparatus includes a first memory, a book image corrector, and a selector. The first memory stores optical positioning information of the image reading apparatus. The book image corrector performs an image correction based on reference data from an image read by the image reading apparatus when the image is of a book document. The selector selects one of the plurality of different correction modes of the second corrector based on the optical positioning information stored in the first memory. The book image corrector includes a first corrector configured to correct in a main scanning direction a distortion of the image of the book document based on the reference data and a second corrector having a plurality of different correction modes configured to correct a distortion of the image of the book document in a sub-scanning direction.

    • An image reading apparatus in which a CIS (1) is pressed by springs (5) to cause abutment members (2) to abut the lower surface of an original support glass (3), wherein the abutment members (2) are arranged within the main scanning reading range of the CIS and, more specifically, at positions where the deflection amount of the original support glass (3) with respect to the end portions of the main scanning reading range is approximately 1/2 of the maximum deflection amount. Thus, when the original support glass (3) is deflected, the CIS is pressed down against the spring force by approximately 1/2 of the maximum deflection amount in the main scanning reading range of the original support glass from the position where the original table has no deflection, whereby the optimum focal position of the CIS is downwardly shifted and as the result, the upper surface of the original support glass constituting the original surface is retained within the effective focus range of the CIS over the entire main scanning reading range, thereby making it possible to perform high quality image reading.
