    • Codes are generated for code word sequences for nucleic acid storage channel modulation. A plurality of information units of a first length and a plurality of quaternary code words of a second length are provided (31, 32). The amount of code words is at least twice the amount of information units and the plurality of quaternary code words comprises no code word where the last three code symbols are identical and no code word where the first two code symbols are identical. The code words are distributed (33) to at least a first and a second code and the information units are mapped (35) to the code words of the first code and of the second code. A device (40) for generating code word sequences for nucleic acid channel modulation is used to generate at least one code word sequence by concatenating code words selected from the different codes.

    • A nucleic acid storage system (20), a method and an apparatus for storing information units in nucleic acid molecules are described. A coding scheme is applied which avoids generation of self-reverse complementary nucleic acid strands. A first code generator (28) provides first code words, wherein the reverse complementary words also belong to the first code. A second code generator (30) provides second code words, wherein the reverse complementary words also belong to the second code. No code word exists within the first and second code which belongs to both codes. An information encoder (32) encodes the information units using first code words. A multiplexer (34) generates multiplexed code word sequences wherein after a predefined amount of first code words one second code word is inserted. A nucleic acid synthesizer (36) synthesizes nucleic acid molecules wherein a sequence of nucleotides is arranged to correspond to the multiplexed code word sequence.

    • Methods and apparatuses for encoding and decoding RLL MTR codes such as a rate 16/17 RLL(6) MTR(4) code and a rate 24/25 RLL(6) MTR(4) code. The encoding method comprises a step of converting a data word into a temporary codeword according to a conversion table for enforcing RLL and MTR constraints, a step of checking violations of the maximum-runlength constraint when concatenating a present and an earlier codeword, and when a violation is detected, a step of selecting one of the present or earlier temporary codeword which has at least four contiguous zeroes adjacent to their boundary, and a step of converting the four zeroes in order to meet the maximum-runlength constraint. Error propagation is reduced by converting one word only upon detection of RLL violation.
