    • The present invention concerns a fuel assembly (4) for a nuclear power boiling water reactor, comprising:
      a fuel channel (6) defining a central fuel channel axis (8),
      fuel rods (10), each having a central fuel rod axis (12),
      at least 3 water channels (14) for non-boiling water, each water channel having a central water channel axis (16) and each water channel having a larger cross-sectional area than the cross-sectional area of (the average) fuel rod (10).
      The fuel rods (10) comprise a first group of full length fuel rods and a second group of shorter fuel rods. The fuel assembly (4) comprises at least 5 fuel rods which belong to said second group and which are positioned such that the central fuel rod axis (12) of each of these at least 5 fuel rods is closer to the central fuel channel axis (8) than any of the water channel axes (16) of the water channels (14).

    • A fuel bundle for a natural-circulation boiling-water reactor includes at least one coolant bypass tube 210 which is at least partially open at both its top 234 and bottom and extends about 2/3 of the bundle height. Water within the bypass tube remains liquid. As it exits the top of the bypass tubes 234, it merges with and "cools" the flow exterior to the tube. This arrangement reduces the pressure drop across the core, increasing coolant flow. In addition, the merging coolant helps improve heat transfer at the maximum heat flux levels 232 within the core. Lateral holes 236 through the bypass tube 210 can further enhance with heat transfer distribution in the core. The reduced pressure drop in the core and the more uniform heat flux distribution both permit a reactor to operate at higher power ratings.

    • A fuel bundle and fuel bundle assembly sequence utilizing a peanut sectioned large water rod is shown locking spacers into place along the axial length of the water rod. In a first embodiment, clearance is defined relative to tabs welded on the large water rod so that spacer assembly to the water rods can occur. In a second and preferred embodiment, spacers are individually equipped with springs locking into complimentary apertures in the peanut sectioned water rod. In both embodiments, the spacers are threaded onto the peanut sectioned water rod and locked into alignment for the receipt of the fuel rods. An improved suspension of the water rod relative to the lower tie plate is disclosed in which a transition piece connects the large water rod to a flexible rod which is threaded at its lower end. This rod is screwed into a threaded aperture in the lower tie plate. Connection of the water rod to the upper tie plate does not occur with the result that assembly is simplified and total fuel bundle part count reduced.
