    • The disclosure relates to drawer assembly (210) having at least one drawer with selectable access, the drawer assembly (210) comprising: at least one drawer housing (122); a belt (412) having a first opening (222; 452); a drawer unit (212) which is slidable within the drawer housing (122), the drawer unit (212) including walls (230, 430) that form a drawer unit interior (232; 422) with individual compartments (234; 422), wherein the belt (412) is moveable relative to the drawer unit (212) such that the belt (412) provides a closure for the drawer unit (212), and the first opening (222; 452) is movable to provide access to a portion of the drawer interior (230, 424); an electric actuator (242) coupled to the belt (412); and a controller (114) coupled to the actuator (242) to control movement of the first opening (222; 452) relative to the drawer interior (232; 422) in response to signals (116) generated from a user interface, wherein the electric actuator (242) is an electric motor (470) coupled to the belt (412) to selectively move the first opening (222; 452) relative to the compartments (234; 422) in response to the controller (114), wherein the controller (114) is configured to control the electric actuator (242) to cause movement of the belt between: a first position in which the belt (220) blocks access to a first compartment and the first opening (222) allows access to a second compartment (234); a second position in which the belt (220) allows access to the first compartment and forms a closure with the second compartment (234); and a third position in which the belt (220 forms a closure with both the first and second compartments.

    • Improvements to increase the speed at which a vending machine can dispense articles are disclosed. In various embodiments, the machine defines plural first arrays of receptacles for receiving articles with the first arrays stacked so that adjacent receptacles in the first arrays form second arrays. A separate user door closes each first array of receptacles, a slot door assembly provides a plurality of receptacle doors operative to open a particular receptacle when the user door is unlocked, and a slot access mechanism provides access to a particular receptacle. The machine waits a specified time period after dispensing to detect whether a subsequent user request is received. If a subsequent user request is received, the machine moves the slot access mechanism directly to a receptacle where the articles are available. Additional improvements include procedures for avoiding problems caused by misaligned doors and procedures for providing optimal article stocking.

    • A dispenser for use in a self select retail environment and adapted for controlled delivery of packages has a dispensing member (6; 56) which is manually actuated so that individual packages (2) are taken in turn from a stack of packages stored in the dispenser and presented for removal when the dispensing member is in its open position. Return movement of the dispensing member (6, 56) from the open to the closed position under the influence of a return spring (12; 64; 86) is retarded by a rotary damper (20) driven by a toothed rack (17; 67; 80) so that the rate at which packages can be removed from the dispenser by repeated actuation of the dispensing member is restricted. In one embodiment the packages are stacked vertically and the dispensing member comprises a drawer (6) which is guided for horizontal sliding movement (Figs 1-16 and 28-35). In an alternative embodiment the packages are stacked horizontally and the dispensing member is a door (56) which pivots about a horizontal axis between an upright closed position and a forwardly inclined open position (Figs 17-27). The dispenser allows controlled loading of packages, but removal of packages by reversal of the loading procedure is prevented. Thus, a series of loading slots (32) may be formed along the stack container (Fig 7) or barbs (42; 45) which flex or move to allow downward movement and which block upward movement can be disposed along a loading slot (41) (Figs 10 and 11).
