摘要： Embodiments of the present invention disclose a wavelength selective switch WSS, including an input optical fiber collimation array, a first optical switching engine, a dispersion unit, an optical path converter, a second optical switching engine, a third optical switching engine, and an output optical fiber collimation array. A first beam is input from a first port of the input optical fiber collimation array. The first optical switching engine performs angle deflection on the first beam on a first plane. The dispersion unit demultiplexes, on a second plane, the angle-deflected first beam into multiple sub-wavelength beams. The second optical switching engine performs angle deflection on the multiple sub-wavelength beams that are obtained by means of demultiplexing. The dispersion unit multiplexes, on the second plane, the angle-deflected multiple sub-wavelength beams. The third optical switching engine performs angle deflection on the multiplexed multiple sub-wavelength beams on the first plane, so that the multiplexed multiple sub-wavelength beams are output from a second port of the output optical fiber collimation array. According to the foregoing technical solutions, optical switching in two dimensions is implemented, and input and output ports are arranged in two dimensions.

摘要： Optical networks are increasingly employing optical network nodes having multiple interfaces to allow a node to direct optical signals received at any interface to any other interface connected to the node. Constructing a larger wavelength selective switching (WSS) module used in such a node can be complex and expensive. A method an apparatus for constructing a large WSS using parallelism is provided. In example embodiments, a larger WSS may include multiple parallel non-cascaded smaller WSSs and an optical coupler configured to optically couple the multiple parallel, non-cascaded smaller WSSs. This technique may be used to construct both N x 1 and 1 x N WSSs. Because the technique employs multiple parallel, non-cascaded WSSs, all inputs of a larger N x 1 WSS and all outputs of a larger 1 xN WSS are available receive or transmit external signals rather than being rather than being unavailable due to, for example, cascading smaller WSS devices together.

摘要： A coolerless photonic integrated circuit (PIC), such as a semiconductor electro-absorption modulator/laser (EML) or a coolerless optical transmitter photonic integrated circuit (TxPIC), may be operated over a wide temperature range at temperatures higher then room temperature without the need for ambient cooling or hermetic packaging. Since there is large scale integration of N optical transmission signal WDM channels on a TxPIC chip, a new DWDM system approach with novel sensing schemes and adaptive algorithms provides intelligent control of the PIC to optimize its performance and to allow optical transmitter and receiver modules in DWDM systems to operate uncooled. Moreover, the wavelength grid of the on-chip channel laser sources may thermally float within a WDM wavelength band where the individual emission wavelengths of the laser sources are not fixed to wavelength peaks along a standardized wavelength grid but rather may move about with changes in ambient temperature. However, control is maintained such that the channel spectral spacing between channels across multiple signal channels, whether such spacing is periodic or aperiodic, between adjacent laser sources in the thermally floating wavelength grid are maintained in a fixed relationship. Means are then provided at an optical receiver to discover and lock onto floating wavelength grid of transmitted WDM signals and thereafter demultiplex the transmitted WDM signals for OE conversion.

摘要： A multiple target optical imaging apparatus performs optical imaging of a plurality of physically-separated imaging sites using a light source, a two-dimensional detector and a plurality of fiber bundles. Each fiber bundle has a distal end positioned adjacent to a different one of the imaging sites, and conveys source light from its proximal end to its distal end, while conveying an optical signal from its respective imaging site from its distal end to its proximal end. The optical signals may be simultaneously detected on different regions of the detector. The system is small, and may be used to image sites on an ambulatory animal, with the light source and detector located in a portable housing attached to the animal. Different types of imaging may be used, including fluorescence imaging, hyperspectral imaging, or polarization imaging.
