    • A method of manufacturing an open top, walled member (11) for containing a molten metal, especially a flowing molten metal or repairing or reconstructing a worn or damaged member includes the step of forming the inner walls (19) or a mold which define the inner surfaces of the walled member of an open metal mesh screen (21) which is meltable by the molten metal which is to be contained and transferring, usually by pumping, an alumina-silicon carbide casting compound (37) into the space between the open mesh metal screen and the outer walls (15) defining the mold, which outer walls may be in situ structures. If an existing walled member is being repaired or reconstructed, any damaged or worn portions of the existing walled member are removed and the casting compound is poured in to replace these portions. The next step is to apply heat to dry the casting compound while the open mesh screen of the mold remains in place in contact with the casting compound. The final step involves removing the open screen mesh by flowing hot molten metal into the open top, walled containment member.

    • The invention relates to a method and device for inserting elongated steel workpieces into a transport grate (1), which has to be conveyed therewith through a heat-treatment furnace in order to subject the workpieces to a heat treatment. According to the invention, the transport grate (1) is provided with placement cavities (3) for the workpieces and with holding openings (7), which are located above the placement cavities (3) at a distance therefrom, whereby the workpieces extend through the holding openings (7) and, when inserted, are laterally held by the holding openings (7) at a distance therefrom. A material handling robot (B) is provided whose paths and angles of movement are measured by a position measuring system and are forwarded to an electronic control. A feeler mandrel (F) with a centering cone (30) is firstly immersed into the holding opening (7) in order to determine the optimal position of the workpiece subsequently inserted by the material handling robot. This results in preventing damages to the workpiece when inserting the same into the transport grate in the instance that the transport grate has been deformed by repeatedly occurring thermal effects.

    • A method is provided for installing a refractory lining in a blast furnace or other metallurgical vessel. A consumable form is installed along an inner surface of an outer shell of the metallurgical vessel. The consumable form is spaced apart from the outer shell. The metallurgical vessel is then filled with burden, which supports the consumable form. Casting composition may then be inserted between the consumable form and the outer shell. The casting composition is heated for a period of time before the burden is ignited. Cables which are lowered from the top of the vessel and secured at a lower end of the vessel may be used. Tubes mounted on panels may be threaded along the cables to position the panels in constructing the consumable form.
