    • The invention relates to combustion equipment for combustible material, which combustion equipment includes a heating boiler (1) and a firebox in it (1.1). The combustion equipment also includes means for feeding the material to the heating boiler (1), and fans (4, 3) for feeding primary and secondary air to the heating boiler (1), in order to burn the material in the firebox (1.1). The equipment includes a briquetting machine (7.1) for forming the combustible material into briquets and a briquet-transfer pipe (7) connected to it, which is arranged to open into the firebox (1.1) thus forming a combustion zone. A larger blast pipe (8) arranged at a distance around the briquet-transfer pipe (7), for feeding primary air to the briquet.

    • This invention relates to combustion apparatus incorporating a balanced draught system comprising a forced draught fan (6) for delivering combustion air to a burner section (7) and an induced draught fan (9) for extracting effluent gases from the burner section (7). A drive mechanism (10) operates the fans. In order to improve the efficiency of the apparatus and simplify control of gas flow therethrough, according to the invention the fans (6, 9) are operatively coupled such that adjustment of both is simultaneous, maintaining a predeterminable relationship between their outputs. This enables system characteristics to be matched almost exactly. Coupling of the drive mechanism (10) to the respective fans can be by conventional means, but fan control is preferably accomplished by speed variation, electric motors using a frequency converter system.

    • The present invention relates to a starved-air combustor of the type capable of consuming non-conventional fuels such as the byproducts of wood, pulp, and paper mills, and household and commercial refuse. Prior art starved-air combustors have not been entirely satisfactory in entirely consuming the combustible elements of the fuel at high throughput without producing air pollution. While the pollution problem can be solved to a degree by the utilization of scrubbers and other antipollution devices, such mechanisms are very expensive and their cost may militate against the use of alternative energy sources. The disclosed starved-air combustor includes a combustion chamber which is divided into a plurality of combustion chamber zones with separate overfire and underfire airflows being individually provided for each zone. Fuel is fed to the combustor in selectable constant weight ' batches and the supply of underfire air is proportional to the rate at which an auger rotates to convey the fuel through the combustor. Overfire air is supplied to each combustion zone in an inverse relationship to the variance of a sensed temperature within the zone from a predetermined temperature.
