    • An axle assembly having an axle housing, an input pinion, a ring gear, a ring gear bearing, a differential assembly and a pair of axle shafts. The input pinion is mounted to the axle housing for rotation about a first axis. The ring gear is received in the axle housing and meshed with the input pinion. The ring gear bearing supports the ring gear on the axle housing for rotation about a second axis. The ring gear bearing has a bearing race, which is integrally formed with the ring gear, and a plurality of first bearing element that contact the first bearing race. The differential assembly has a differential case, which is coupled to the ring gear for rotation therewith, and a pair of output members. Each axle shaft being coupled for rotation with a corresponding one of the output members.

    • A carrier assembly for a drive axle includes a pinion and ring gear input (102) that is operably coupled to a differential assembly. The differential assembly includes first and second case halves (148,150) that attach to each other at an interface to define a case split line (160) and a differential gear assembly supported by the first and second case halves with the gear assembly being operably coupled to drive a pair of laterally spaced wheels. The ring gear (138), first case half, and second case half are all connected together via a single bolted joint with the case split line being located behind the ring gear. The differential housing (106) is supported on a pair of tapered roller bearings (166,168) having a diverging apex configuration to reduce cup rotation. The pinion gear is solely supported by a pair of tapered roller bearings (112) positioned on opposite sides of the ring gear. A two-piece pinion cage supports both pinion bearings (112) and facilitates the setting of preload with the use of external shims.
