    • The invention refers to a timing chain system comprising a crankshaft sprocket, at least one camshaft sprocket, a timing chain operably connecting the crankshaft sprocket and at least one camshaft sprocket and adjusting means for adjusting the phase or circumferential position of the at least one camshaft sprocket relative to that of the crankshaft sprocket. The current structural space for such a system shall be reduced. Therefore, the adjusting means comprises a pivotally attached tensioning rail which is biased against the inside of the slack strand of the timing chain between the crankshaft sprocket and at least one camshaft sprocket, a pivotally attached guide rail which is in contact with the inside of the taut strand of the timing chain between the crankshaft sprocket and at least one camshaft sprocket and an actuator for adjusting the pivotal position of the tensioning rail and the guide rail in order to adjust the phase or circumferential position of the at least one camshaft sprocket relative to that of the crankshaft sprocket. The invention also refers to respective adjusting means and a respective IC engine comprising such a timing chain system.
