摘要： There is provided a high-purity silica glass fabricating method using a sol-gel process. In the method, a first sol is formed by mixing 100 parts by weight of fumed silica powder with between 100 to 300 parts by weight of deionized water. The first sol is gelled, dried, powdered, and thermally treated. A second sol is formed by mixing the thermally-treated first sol with between 100 to 200 parts by weight of deionized water and 20 to 50 parts by weight of non-thermally treated original fumed silica powder. The second sol is gelled, dried, and sintered. Thus, a high-purity silica glass is formed.

摘要： Using sol-gel techniques, an optical gain medium has been fabricated comprising a glass ceramic host material that includes clusters of crystalline oxide material, especially tin oxide, and that is doped with active ions concentrated at the clusters. The active ions are preferentially located at the nanoclusters so that they experience the relatively low phonon energy of the oxide and are insensitive to the phonon energy of the host. A host with a high phonon energy, such as silica, can therefore be used without the usual drawback of reduced carrier lifetimes through enhanced nonradiative decay rates.

The fiber contains a core region comprising a first material and one or more axially oriented elements disposed in the first material. 摘要： The smoothness of refractory dielectric bodies, particularly silica glass bodies derived from a sol-gel process, is substantially improved by a relatively straightforward treatment. In particular, the surface of the body is treated with a plasma fireball, such as induced by a plasma torch. The treatment is able to reduce the roughness, as measured by RA, in overcladding tubes formed by a sol-gel process by at least a factor of 2, typically at least a factor of 5. It is also possible to improve the smoothness of silica tubes that are drawn from a billet. Typically, the process reduces the roughness of silica bodies to an RA of about 1 microinch or less.
