    • A method for treating effluents containing nitrogen in the form of ammonium, implementing chemical reactions for oxidising and reducing the nitrogen in a sequencing batch reactor, the method comprising: -a feeding step, which involves introducing a volume of effluents to be treated into the reactor, -at least one first aeration step, which involves injecting oxygen or air into the reactor for partial oxidation of the ammonium into nitrites and/or nitrates, -a second anoxic step, which involves interrupting the injection of oxygen or air, thus producing gaseous nitrogen, -a settling step, during which the sludge is deposited at the bottom of the reactor and the content of the reactor is clarified close to the surface of same, -a draining step, which involves discharging a clarified fraction of the content of the reactor, said draining and feeding steps taking place simultaneously, in which, during the feeding step, the volume of effluents to be treated is introduced close to the bottom of the reactor, and in which, during the draining step, the clarified fraction of the content of the reactor is discharged at a predefined discharge level close to the surface of the content of the reactor.

    • A method and system for removing nitrogen from a downflow denitrification media filter which optimizes the bump timing increasing productivity. The method comprises measuring the influent and effluent nitrate concentrations and determining total nitrate-nitrogen accumulation. A bump of the filter is initiated based on a comparison of the total nitrate-nitrogen accumulation with a predetermined accumulated nitrate-nitrogen value. The method may utilize a processor, having a memory, which is capable of communicating with, receiving input from and sending output to, and controlling the filter and any in-line measurement tools. The method may include a bump timing factor to adjust the bump interval when the actual operating conditions are substantially different from the operating conditions that were present when the predetermined accumulated nitrate-nitrogen value was determined. A method for predicting the bump interval and determination of an estimated time until the next bump are also included.
