    • A biometric-electronic key system (2) includes an electronic key (3) that stores an electronic key ID and a communication peer (33) that is capable of performing wireless communication with the electronic key ID. A non-accomplishment notification unit (34) presents the user with a non-accomplishment notification of the biometric authentication when the biometric authentication cannot be accomplished. A key operation authentication unit (35) executes authentication corresponding to an electronic key operation performed by the user in response to receipt of the non-accomplishment notification. An actuation permission unit (36) permits actuation of the device (32) even when the biometric authentication cannot be accomplished as long as the authentication performed by the key operation authentication unit (35) has been accomplished.

    • A method is proposed for verifying a vehicle operator's identity utilizing biometric data that can change over time for a particular person thereby potentially permitting a verification failure of that person based on a comparison of current biometric measures against a previously-produced template of the same characteristics, said method comprising automatically updating the previously-produced template, said automatic update being achieved in a multi-modal verification system wherein said verification system uses more than one biometric/PIN-code/smart card, wherein upon the operator entering the vehicle a prompt is issued requiring identity verification using PIN-code, fingerprint and face recognition, and after which the system verifies the operator identity using PIN-code and face recognition and uses the fingerprint biometric to update the fingerprint template in the database.
