    • A steel pipe having a circular sectional form is retained by a retainer. A rotatable first roller is pressed against an intermediate portion of the steel pipe. In this state, a pusher causes the steel pipe to move axially of the steel pipe. This causes the steel pipe to be plastically deformed while maintaining the first roller in rolling contact with the steel pipe whereby a flat portion is formed at the intermediate portion of the steel pipe. Subsequently, a second roller for forming rack teeth which is formed with teeth at its outer periphery is pressed against the flat portion of the steel pipe while the steel pipe is relatively moved in the axial direction thereof. This causes the flat portion of the steel pipe to be plastically deformed for formation of rack teeth at the flat portion.

    • The invention relates to a method for producing a steering gear rack (100), which has a tooth-set segment (110) having a steering tooth set (115) and a screw segment (120) having a recirculating ball screw (125), comprising: - providing a rod-like blank composed of a solid metal material; - hollowing out the screw segment (120) by means of deep-hole drilling at one end, wherein a deep blind hole (130) extending axially through the screw segment (120) is produced; and - producing the recirculating ball screw (125) on the hollow screw segment (120) by means of machining. The invention further relates to a steering gear rack (100) for a motor vehicle produced by means of said method, said steering gear rack comprising a tooth-set segment (110) having a steering tooth set (115) and a screw segment (120) having a recirculating ball screw (125), wherein, despite the one-piece production, the tooth-set segment (110) is solid and the screw segment (120) is hollow.
