摘要： Intracavitary brachytherapy tandem and ovoid oncology treatment systems and methods are provided. One such system and method employs a multi-part tandem having a detachable distal section suitable for retaining within a body cavity such as the uterus, both during radiation treatment and during recovery time between radiation treatments. This distal portion can be intended for single-patient use and be disposed of after completion of a radiation treatment session having multiple radiation dose treatment times. One or both of real time in vivo detection and monitoring and hytpertherapy features can be included. One or more of the system tandem or ovoid colpostats feature bendability to tailor the system to the specific body and patient being treated. The method includes having a tandem distal section inserted into a body cavity such as a uterus and remaining within the body cavity in between treatment times. Other systems and methods incorporate balloon devices that assist in spacing radiation doses away from body sites at which radiation treatment is not intended. Balloon devices also can be provided for adjusting and maintaining separation spacing between two ovoid colpostats while intracavitary.

摘要： Light generating devices for illuminating portions of vascular tissue, to render photodynamic therapy. In one embodiment, a light source array preferably including a plurality of light emitting diodes, a focusing lens, and a light diffusing element are included in a distal end of a catheter. A balloon is optionally provided to interrupt blood flow that can block the transmission of light, and to center the apparatus in a blood vessel. Optical fibers optionally direct light from the light source to the diffusing element. The light source array can have a radial or linear configuration and can produce more than one wavelength of light for activating different photoreactive agents. Linear light source elements are particularly useful to treat elongate portions of tissue in a vessel. One embodiment intended for use with a conventional balloon catheter integrates light sources into a guidewire.

摘要： An apparatus for treating a stenosis or occlusion in a bodily conduit is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a flexible elongate catheter (84) having a proximal and distal end and with a lumen extending therethrough, a flexible elongate guide wire (86) having a first diameter insertable through said lumen so as to extend through the distal end of the catheter and an elongate radioactive source wire (94) having a second diameter insertable into the lumen when the guidewire (86) has been removed therefrom. The apparatus also has a plug (88,112) affixed to said distal end of said catheter (84) provided at least partially within the lumen of said catheter (84) and having an interior passageway (91) therethrough. The passageway (91) has a diameter which is greater than the first diameter to allow the guidewire (86) to extend through the plug (88,112), but less than the second diameter to prevent the radioactive source wire (94) from passing through the plug (88,1162) beyond the distal end of the catheter (84).

摘要： An intravascular radiation delivery system including a catheter, a radiation source disposed in an open-ended lumen in the catheter and a closed-ended sheath surrounding the radiation source so as to prevent blood and other fluids from coming into contact with the radiation source. Preferably, the open-ended lumen is centered in the balloon for uniform radiation delivery. The catheter may include a blood perfusion lumen under the balloon or around the balloon. The open-ended lumen in the catheter may have a reduced diameter adjacent the distal end of the catheter to prevent the radiation source from exiting the lumen. Methods of using the radiation delivery system are also disclosed. An alternative method of delivering radiation to a treatment site inside the vasculature of a patient using a gas-filled balloon catheter and a radiation source disposed in the balloon catheter. The treatment site is exposed to radiation, preferably beta radiation, through the gas-filled balloon.
