    • A pulse-echo level measuring method comprises the steps of:
      - successively transmitting energy pulses to a surface of a material whose level is to be measured,
      - receiving and converting, for each energy pulse, associated echoes into an echo function over time,
      - providing a time-varying threshold function (TVT) and identifying valid echoes (E1, E2, E3) in each echo function as those that exceed the threshold function (TVT),
      - identifying, on the basis of changes in position of the valid echoes (E1, E2, E3) of at least three echo functions and on the further basis of motion information on the level of the material, one of the valid echoes (E1, E2, E3) of each echo function as coming from the surface of the material, and
      - using the identified echo (E2) for tracking the level.
      According to the invention, echo processing is simplified in that the method further comprises the step of:
      - once the wanted echo (E2) is identified, reshaping the time-varying threshold function (TVT) to mask the hitherto valid echoes (E1, E3) with the exception of the identified echo (E2).

    • A method for processing an echo profile and a pulse-echo ranging system
      Pulse-echo ranging system are used in level measurement applications for determining the distance to a target object by measuring how long after transmission of a pulse an echo pulse is received. An echo profile (17) is generated and then processed to determine the temporal position of the echo pulse on a temporal axis.
      Based on the fact that the peak portion and the trailing edge of the echo profile are susceptible to be affected by the measurement environment and the target object itself, the accuracy in determining the echo arrival time is increased, by the steps of fitting a branch of a parabola (19) to a selected portion of the leading edge (18) of the echo profile (17) and determining the temporal position of the fitted parabola (19) on the temporal axis.

    • The level measurement apparatus comprises a controller (110), a transducer (120), a transmitter (140), an interface (170), and a digital receive signal processing module (180). The transmitter (140) is operatively coupled to the transducer (120) and responsive to the controller (110) for emitting energy pulses directed at the surface (20) of a material (20) contained in a vessel (10). The interface (170) is operatively coupled to the transducer (120) and includes an analog-to-digital converter (174) for digitizing the energy pulses reflected by the surface (30). The digital receive signal processing module (180) comprises a plurality of program components for processing the digitized echo pulses and determining a level measurement for the material (20) contained in the vessel (10).
