    • A filter vial for separating biological and chemical fluids has a cylindrical sidewall with an open top (80) and a closed bottom (12). A protrusion extends upwards from the middle of the bottom to form an annular recess (14). A tubular plunger (18) has an open bottom end (20) to which is fastened an annular cap (50) having an outer sidewall (52) sized to fit into and seal against the vial's sidewall. An inner sidewall (54) of the annular cap (50) holds a filter (70) over an opening in the bottom of the plunger (20) and forms a shaped cavity leading to that filter (70). The annular cap (50) on the plunger (18) fits into the annular recess in the vial to force fluid from the vial through the filter (70) and into the plunger (50).

    • A filter vial (42) and piston (10) are provided where the vial (42) has a cylindrical wall with a closed bottom and open top and with the hollow, tubular piston (10) therein. The piston (10) has a position stop (23) located and configured to abut a mating position stop on the vial to limit relative movement of the piston (10) and vial (42). The position stops (23) are located to stop the distal end (34) of the piston (10) away from the bottom of the vial a distance of about 10-30% the height (H) of the vial. That a material to be dissolved in a liquid in the vial and to remove unwanted molecules from the liquid with the piston (10) forcing the liquid through the filter (40) but not squeezing the slurry of material so as to force it into the filter.
