    • A strength member (62-64) for an automobile body (61) such as a side member (62) or a pillar (63,64,67) which has a bent portion (40a) which is bent two-dimensionally or three-dimensionally and which has an ultrahigh strength with a tensile strength exceeding 1100 MPa is provided. The strength member (62-64) for an automobile body (61) has a tubular body (40h) which has a closed cross section which does not have an outwardly-extending flange and which has a bent portion which is bent two-dimensionally or three-dimensionally, a portion to be cut or punched (40b), and a portion to be welded (40c). The tubular body has an ultrahigh strength heat-treated portion (40e) which has been heat treated to have a tensile strength exceeding 1100 MPa, a high strength heat-treated portion (40f) which is the remainder other than the ultrahigh strength heat-treated portion and which has been heat treated to have a tensile strength of at least 600 MPa and at most 1100 MPa, and/or a low strength heat-treated portion which is the portion to be cut or punched or the portion to be welded and which has been heat treated to have a tensile strength of less than 600 MPa.

    • An impact-absorbing member formed from a tubular body that absorbs impact energy by buckling under an impact load applied from axially one end in the axial direction. A lateral cross-sectional shape of at least a part in the axial direction of the impact-absorbing member is a closed cross-section having vertexes, no flange is provided on the outside of the closed cross-section, and the cross-section has a groove portion recessed toward inside the outline of a fundamental cross-section formed by the largest outline obtained by connecting some of the vertexes, the groove portion being formed at a position in a region of at least one side of the fundamental cross-section, the region excluding end points of the one side. As a result, the impact-absorbing member achieves a predetermined impact-absorbing amount by buckling stably in the axial direction without bending, where a weight increase caused by addition of a partition wall and increase in a plate thickness is not involved.

    • A front side member (41A-D) has a body formed from a tubular body (40d) which has a closed cross section and which is constituted by a single member in the axial direction. The body has, from one end towards the other end in the axial direction, a front portion which extends in the fore and aft direction of a vehicle body, a sloping portion which is continuous with the front portion (55) and which slopes downwards along a dash panel, and a rear portion (57) which is continuous with the sloping portion and which extends along the bottom surface of a floor panel which is joined to the dash panel. A portion of the front portion is an unquenched portion which has not undergone quenching treatment and the remainder other than that portion is a high frequency quenched portion (57b) which has undergone high frequency quenching. All of the sloping portion (56) is a high frequency quenched portion (55b) which has undergone high frequency quenching. A portion of the rear portion is an unquenched portion (57a) which has not undergone quenching, and the remainder other than that portion is a high frequency quenched portion which has undergone high frequency quenching.
