    • A known method of producing solid titanium trichloride catalyst is to reduce TiCl 4 with a hydrocarbyl aluminium or hydrocarbyl aluminum halide in an inert aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, optionally heat-treating the product at up to 150°C, reacting the product in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent with a halogen or interhalogen compound and a dialkyl ether, separating the solid catalyst from the liquid medium, and washing it with an inert solvent such as toluene and drying it.
      To prevent clogging of a glass filter used in the separating step and aggregation of the catalyst into tough masses during the drying, the washing liquid is an aliphatic hydrocarbon such as n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane, isooctane or n-decane; subsequent washing can be with an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon. 1.5 to 20 ml of washing liquid are used per gram of solid catalyst. The washings are rapidly filtered on a glass filter; the product is dried in vacuo to a powder.
      The catalyst is useful, together with an organo aluminum activator, in polymerizing an olefin, e.g. propylene, optionally with another olefin as comonomer, to form powder largely of size >1,000 microns.
