摘要： Random polarization lights which are emitted from 1st and 2nd light source units (101x and 101z) are separated into 2 types of polarization lights having different directions by a polarization separating unit (202) and then secondary light source images shifted in an x-direction are formed and the polarization lights are arranged in the same direction. At that time, in order to make both the secondary light source images by S-polarization lights and both the secondary light source images by P-polarization lights in lights emitted from the 1st and 2nd light source units (101x and 101z) respectively overlap each other, 1st, 2nd and 3rd light collecting mirror plates (1001x, 1002 and 1001z) are placed aslant. With this constitution, a polarized light illuminating apparatus which can utilize both the polarization components without increasing the areas of the light source images even if a plurality of light sources are used can be obtained and, further, a projection-type display which can project a very bright projection image can be obtained.

摘要： A dark line attributed to the center axis of a cross dichroic prism is made inconspicuous. A stepped reflecting mirror (150) is provided between a 2nd lens array (130) and a condenser lens (160). The stepped reflecting mirror (150) has a function of shifting the light paths of part of a plurality of partial fluxes of light which are transmitted through a plurality of small lenses arranged at the same row direction positions of the lens arrays (120 and 130) from the light paths of the other partial fluxes of light. A flat light transmitting plate may be provided instead of the stepped reflecting mirror (150) to shift the light paths. Alternatively, part of the columns of the lens arrays (120 and 130) may be shifted from each other to shift the partial fluxes of light.

摘要： A plate-like polarized light separator of a structure in which polarized light separating film surfaces and reflecting film surfaces are arranged alternately at fine pitches, and a projection display using such a polarized light separator. In the process for manufacturing such a polarized light separator, a glass block consisting of glass plates each having a polarized light separating multilayer film of an inorganic material, and glass plates each having a light reflecting surface are stuck alternately, is cut obliquely with respect to the stuck surfaces. At least one of the sides of the plate-like block thus cut off may be provided with a projecting used for the positioning of the polarized light separator. When a μ/2 phase plate is joined to a part of the light-outgoing surface of this polarized light separator, the polarized light separator which outputs either of s polarized component or p polarized component of light emitted from a light source is obtained. Such a polarized light separator can be utilized for a projection display.

摘要： A polarized lighting apparatus according to the present invention comprises a light source (401), an integrator optical system (403), separation means (402) for separating polarized light outgoing from the light source into two polarized light beams (S, P) making an apple less than 90°, and conversion means (442) for aligning the polarization directions of the two polarized light beams. The separation means (402) is disposed either outside or inside a first lens plate (441) of the integrator optical system, or inside a second lens plate. The separation means is preferably a prism beam splitter equipped with a polarizing beam splitter film (426) consisting of a thermally stable dielectric multilayered film. Because the directions of the polarized light beams are aligned according to the present invention, their major proportion can be utilized, and polarized light having uniform brightness can be emitted. Therefore, the present invention is suitable for a projection type display device equipped with a liquid crystal light valve.

摘要： A projection type display device (1) comprises an illumination optical system (2A), a color separation system (4) for separating white light (W) entering from the optical system (2A) into color beams (R, G, B); three liquid crystal panels (5R, 5G, 5B) for modulating the respective color beams; a waveguide system (9) disposed on the optical path of the beam (G), which is the longest of all the paths of the separated beams that enter the three light valves; a dichroic prism (6) for combining the beams modulated through the liquid crystal panels; and a projection lens (7) for projecting the combined light on a screen (8). The illumination optical system (2A) is equipped with a uniform illumination optical device (3) which converts white light to a uniform rectangular beam. The dichroic prism as an optical element having symmetry of rotation with respect to the axis of the projection optical system is used for the color synthesis system, and the uniform illumination optical device for suppressing the unevenness in color and illuminance is assembled in the illumination optical system. Accordingly, the display device has high illumination efficiency with less unevenness in color and illuminance.
