According to the invention, said internal combustion engine is provided with an injection valve by which means fuel can be injected directly into a combustion chamber either in a first operating mode during an admission phase or in a second operating mode during a compression phase. A control device provides variable control and/or regulation of the mass of fuel being injected into the combustion chamber in both operating modes. Said control device is configured in such a way that in the first operating mode, a required mass of air (rlsollhom) can be determined from a required torque (milsoll) and the mass of fuel to be injected can be determined from this.
