    • The invention relates to a random access procedure for use in a mobile communication system. To suggest a random access procedure that allows more information to be conveyed in the fist scheduled transmission of the random access procedure, the invention proposes a random access procedure for use in a mobile communication system, wherein a base station transmits a random access response in response to receiving a random access preamble from a mobile terminal, wherein the random access response message comprises a grant for a scheduled transmission by the mobile terminal and an indication on the uplink transmission mode for the scheduled transmission.

    • The invention relates to a method for transmitting data packets between an eNodeB and a mobile node (MN) when simultaneously using the HARQ protocol with soft-combining for unicast and multicast transmissions. Unicast transmissions are assigned to HARQ processes by the eNB, whereas multicast transmissions need to be assigned to a HARQ process by the MN. According to a first aspect, the soft-buffer memory is strictly separated into a unicast and multicast section, and HARQ protocol operations for unicast and multicast are independent. Due to the separation, the eNB can still correctly assign the unicast transmissions to a HARQ process. According to a second aspect, the soft-buffer is not separated but commonly used for unicast and multicast. However, in order for the eNB to still be able to correctly assign the unicast transmissions to a free HARQ process, the MN assigns the multicast transmission depending on a rule, known also to the eNB.

    • The invention relates to methods for scheduling of uplink transmission and generating transport blocks according to multiple received uplink assignments. Furthermore, the invention is also related to the implementation of these methods in hardware and software. To propose strategies for generating plural transport blocks within a given time constraint, the invention introduces prioritization of the uplink assignments, so that multiple uplink assignments can be ranked in the mobile terminal in a priority order. The prioritization of the uplink assignments is used to determine the order in which the individual transport blocks corresponding to the uplink assignments are filled, respectively how the data of different logical channels is multiplexed to the transport blocks for transmission in the uplink. Another aspect of the invention is to suggest joint logical channel procedures that operate on virtual transport blocks accumulated from the received uplink assignments. One or more such joint logical channel procedure can be performed in parallel.

    • The invention relates to a method for receiving data units when using one HARQ process of an HARQ protocol. The memory associated to the HARQ process is divided into several sub-areas, which are addressable by an identifier. Then, when data is received, same is stored in one of the sub-areas. By providing more than one sub-area for one HARQ process, it is possible to actually use one HARQ process for two (or more) different received data units, being from the same data flow or from a different data flow. The actual sub-area of the HARQ process for storing data units can be either freely selected at the receiving end or is indicated by an identifier associated with the data. Furthermore, persistent scheduled data is transmitted in units, scheduled at fixed time intervals. Thus, a control signaling field, usually used for indicating new units, can be used to store the identifier.
