    • A subsystem is disclosed providing a steerable-beam light source (10). An array (16) of micromechanical reflectors may be disposed to selectively direct portions of light from a light source (14) to selected targets (O) in a scene, such as for providing composed illumination for still or video photography. The array (16) of reflectors may be continuously steerable, thereby achieving more than the mere inefficient patterning of illumination light available from prior art projection approaches, but instead efficiently redirecting light to the desired regions of the scene. The subsystem may be sufficiently compact so as to permit integration with a compact camera into a cellular telephone, a tablet computer, a laptop computer, a digital still-image camera, a digital video-image camera, and so on. The array (16) may be operated in conjunction with a camera controller to selectively illuminate one or more targets (O) of focus or zoom or omit illumination of undesirable image regions.

    • Microfluidic pixels (110) are utilized to produce large format displays (billboards) (100) that are both digitally controllable and are light weight. Each microfluidic pixel (110) includes a wall having a front (display) surface, and a microfluidic system including a reservoir disposed behind the wall, a colorant fluid, a transparent display chamber disposed in front of the wall, a conduit, and a two-way pump. In the absence of colorant fluid in display chamber, the pixel (110) has a background appearance determined by the color (e.g., white) of the front wall surface. The pump receives a digital control signal from a digital control circuit to transfer colorant fluid from the reservoir to the display chamber by way of the conduit, whereby the pixel's appearance changes to a "colored" appearance determined by the color and amount of the colorant fluid in the display chamber.
