The method includes: A transmit end network device TX sends a first flexible Ethernet FlexE overhead frame to a receive end network device RX, to request active/standby calendar switching. When the RX is in a restart state, the RX does not respond to the received first FlexE overhead frame. In addition, the RX sends a routinely updated second FlexE overhead frame to the TX. The TX determines, based on indication information carried in the second FlexE overhead frame, that the second FlexE overhead frame is not a response to the first FlexE overhead frame. The TX sends a third FlexE overhead frame, and requests active/standby calendar switching again. According to the method in this application, the TX can determine whether a received FlexE overhead frame is a response of the RX to a slot negotiation request sent by the TX. Therefore, incorrect calendar switching on the TX side caused by a mistaken response of the RX can be avoided. This reduces a service interruption that may be caused by an existing slot negotiation mechanism.

The method for generating an Ethernet frame includes: generating the Ethernet frame including a protection field, where a protection range of the protection field includes a destination MAC address field in the Ethernet frame. The method for processing an Ethernet frame includes: receiving a plurality of bytes in the Ethernet frame, where the plurality of bytes include information about the destination MAC address field and information about the protection field; and checking information within the protection range of the protection field based on the information about the protection field. A location of the protection field in the Ethernet frame is before a location of an FCS field of the Ethernet frame in the Ethernet frame. The generated Ethernet frame includes the protection field. When a byte of the Ethernet frame is sent in a CTF manner, a destination MAC address may be checked using the protection field, to avoid forwarding data of an incorrect destination MAC address, thereby improving forwarding reliability of CTF.

In the method, concatenated encoding can enable transmitted data to have a higher coding gain. During transmission on a lane prone to a bit error, effective error correction can be performed on data in which a bit error occurs. In addition, because the first data is data obtained through the interleaving processing, a correlation of error bits in a codeword obtained through second FEC code correction can be eliminated, thereby improving error correction performance and further improving data transmission quality.
