    • To reduce collision noise created by the operation of an electromagnetic suction valve (39) provided on a high pressure fuel supply pump. In the present invention, in order to achieve the above object, the mass of a member which collides by magnetic attractive force is reduced to reduce the noise to be generated. The thus configured present invention provides the following advantageous effects. The noise generated when a core (33) and an anchor (31b) collide with each other by magnetic attractive force depends on the magnitude of the kinetic energy of a moving element. The kinetic energy to be consumed in the collision is only the kinetic energy of the anchor. The kinetic energy of a rod, being absorbed by a spring, does not contribute to the noise; thus, the energy when the anchor and the core collide with each other can be reduced, whereby the noise to be created can be reduced.

    • It is an object of the present invention to to eliminate a valve holder and accommodate a valve guide in a small space provided between a valve seat and a peripheral surface part of a pressure chamber to thereby bring a pump into less size. In order to achieve the above object, the valve guide SG which guides a stroke of a valve 203 is provided inside the valve seat 214S. Specifically, a valve 203 includes an annular abutting surface 203R that abuts a valve seat 214S formed in a valve housing 214 to shut off a fuel intake passage and a bottomed cylindrical part 203F, 203H provided at an inner peripheral part of the annular abutting surface 203R. The bottomed cylindrical part 203F, 203H is inserted into a fuel introduction hole 214P formed in the valve housing 214 inside the valve seat 214S. A member having a cylindrical surface part which supports a reciprocating motion of the valve 203, is fixed to the valve housing 214, in face-to-face with an inner peripheral part of the bottomed cylindrical part 203F, 203H. Thus, the size of the valve guide SG that protrudes from the surface of the valve seat 214S to the pressure chamber side can be shortened. It is therefore possible to bring an inlet valve mechanism portion into less size and eventually render the pump in a small size.

    • In a conventional high-pressure fuel pump, the interference fit part between a plunger and a retainer comes loose with time due to environmental factors and this reduces the clearance between the retainer and a tappet more than necessity, resulting in increase in the contact face pressure between the plunger and a cylinder when a side force acts on the plunger, which causes seizure between the plunger and the cylinder. In this invention, a protrusion protruding toward the tappet is provided around the through-hole for press-fitting the plunger, the through-hole provided in the center portion of the retainer. Since the clearance between the retainer and the tappet can sufficiently be kept even if the joint between the retainer and the plunger comes loose, the seizure between the plunger and the cylinder and the breakage of the plunger are less likely to occur even if the side force acts on the retainer.
