    • In machinery comprising rotary components (8,20) attached to at least one drive shaft (10), at least one rotary bearing (14) positions the drive shaft (10) with a rotational freedom of movement about a drive shaft axis (18) and associated stationary components (22,28) with at least one predetermined clearance (24,26) from the rotary components (8,20). To prevent the rotary components (8,20) from contacting the stationary components (22,28) upon failure of the bearing (14) apparatus is provided which comprises a rotary backup bearing sleeve (34) attached to the drive shaft (10) proximate the bearing (14). The sleeve (34) comprises a rotary radial surface (36) relative to the drive shaft axis (18) and a rotary axial surface (38) relative to the drive shaft axis(18). A stationary backup bearing collar (40) is mounted proximate the rotary backup bearing sleeve (34) and comprises a stationary radial surface (42) relative to the drive shaft axis (18) proximate the rotary radial surface (36) with a predetermined axial clearance (44) and a stationary axial surface (46) relative to the drive shaft axis (18) proximate the rotary axial surface (38) with a predetermined axial clearance (48). The rotary backup bearing sleeve (34) contacts the stationary backup bearing collar (40) upon failure of the bearing (14) and the predetermined axial and radial clearances (44,48) limit deviation of the rotary components (8,20) to less than the predetermined clearance (24,26) from the stationary components (22,28).
