    • A compact fluorescent lamp (1) comprises a discharge tube arrangement (5) with at least one discharge tube (21, 22, 23, 24). The tube is formed of glass, encloses a discharge volume filled with a discharge gas and has a fluorescent phosphor coating disposed on the inner surface of the tube. The tube forms a continuous arc path and is provided with electrodes disposed at each end of the arc path. The lamp also comprises a ballast circuit (7) connected to the electrodes by lead-in wires (17) and to a supply voltage by lead-out wires (18) for controlling the current in the tube. A bulb shaped outer envelope (2) has a substantially spherical portion (3) enclosing the tube arrangement (5) and an elongated end portion (4) enclosing the ballast circuit (7). The end portion of the outer envelope having an open end on a base side is closed and terminated by a closing means (40) of the same material as the outer envelope (2). The closing means (40) is provided with a tubular opening (19). The lead-out wires (18) are isolated from each other and led through the tubular opening (19) to a base (6) for connecting said lamp to said supply voltage through a socket.

    • A dielectric barrier discharge lamp (1) is disclosed, which comprises a discharge vessel (2) having a principal axis (6). The discharge vessel (2) encloses a discharge volume filled with a discharge gas. The discharge vessel (2) further comprises end portions intersected by the principal axis (6). At least one electrode (3) of a first type and at least one electrode (4) of a second type are used in the lamp (1). The electrodes of one type are energized to act as a cathode and the electrodes of other type are energized to act as an anode. The electrodes are substantially straight, elongated electrodes (3,4) with a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to the principal axis (6) of the discharge vessel (2). At least one of the electrodes (3,4) is positioned within the discharge volume, and the electrodes (3) of at least one type are isolated from the discharge volume by a dielectric layer (5). At least one of the electrodes (4) inside the discharge volume is provided with an outer luminescent layer (12). Additionally, at least one of the electrodes (4) inside the discharge volume provided with a luminescent layer (12) may have a reflective layer (11) under the luminescent layer (12).

    • A fluorescent lamp comprises a discharge tube (2) disposed substantially in a plane and shaped at least in part to define a substantial portion of the boundary (4) of a zone (24) in the plane. The part of the tube defining the boundary (4) includes at least one straight portion (6). The discharge tube (2) has a central axis (8) and sealed ends (10) provided with electrodes (12) and at least two tube sections (14, 16) running substantially parallel to each other. Each tube section (14, 16) has at least one blind-sealed end (18) and the tube sections are connected in series through bridges (20) in the vicinity of the blind-sealed ends (18) to define a single continuous discharge space to be excited by electrical power supplied to the electrodes (12). A lamp support housing (22) is positioned within the zone (24) and the ends of the discharge tube (2) as well as the blind-sealed ends (18) of the tube sections (14, 16) are re-entrant into the zone (24). The ends of the discharge tube (2) are received in the lamp support housing (22). The lamp support housing carries means suitable for mechanically and electrically connecting to a socket and include lead-in wires (26) connecting the electrodes (12) directly or through an operating circuit to the means suitable for electrically connecting to a socket.
