    • There is provided a cap and socket arrangement for compact fluorescent lamps. The lamp comprises a discharge tube arrangement (2) made of glass and having sealed ends (8, 9) being positioned at one end of the lamp. A continuous arc path is formed inside the discharge tube between two electrodes disposed at one end of the lamp. At least one of the sealed ends is also provided with an amalgam fill (4). The sealed ends of the discharge tube arrangement are received in the cap (5), and the cap comprises contact members (51) and a protruding fitting member (52) for being received in the socket (6). The socket has a hollow member for receiving the fitting member (52) of the cap, and contact elements (62) for receiving the contact members of the cap. The fitting member (52) and the socket (6) are provided with matching positioning elements (57, 7) for determining the position of the cap (5) with respect to the socket (6) and thereby determining the spatial position of the electrode with respect to the amalgam. The fitting member (52) of the cap of the lamp may comprise an asymmetric groove (57) and the socket (6) may be provided with an asymmetric key element (7) to be associated with the asymmetric groove of the cap.

    • An electrode-to-ballast interconnect is provided in combination with a fluorescent lamp including a discharge tube (2) bent substantially in a plane. The discharge tube (2) is shaped at least in part to define a substantial portion of the boundary (4) of a zone (24) in the plane. The part of the tube (2) defining the boundary (4) includes at least one straight portion (6). The discharge tube (2) has a symmetry axis (8) in the plane and sealed tube ends (10) provided with electrodes, and the tube ends (10) re-enter said zone (24). A base housing (22) is laid within said zone (24) and receives the tube ends (10). The base housing (22) includes a ballast circuit which is located at least partly on a circuit board (14) positioned substantially parallel to the plane. The electrode-to-ballast interconnect comprises electrode-in-leads (16) which are connected to each electrode and embedded in the tube ends (10). Terminals (18) are anchored in and protruding from the circuit board (14). The electrode-in-leads (16) are pre-formed to a shape suitable for connecting to the terminals (18). Means is formed in the circuit board (14) for urging the electrode-in-leads (16) to the terminals (18) during assembly. The electrode-in-leads (16) and the terminals (18) are joined electrically and mechanically. The base housing (22) protrudes at most half of the outer diameter of the discharge tube (2) from the space defined thereby.

    • A compact fluorescent lamp (1) comprises a discharge tube arrangement (5) with at least one discharge tube (21, 22, 23, 24). The tube is formed of glass, encloses a discharge volume filled with a discharge gas and has a fluorescent phosphor coating disposed on the inner surface of the tube. The tube forms a continuous arc path and is provided with electrodes disposed at each end of the arc path. The lamp also comprises a ballast circuit (7) connected to the electrodes by lead-in wires (17) and to a supply voltage by lead-out wires (18) for controlling the current in the tube. A bulb shaped outer envelope (2) has a substantially spherical portion (3) enclosing the tube arrangement (5) and an elongated end portion (4) enclosing the ballast circuit (7). The end portion of the outer envelope having an open end on a base side is closed and terminated by a closing means (40) of the same material as the outer envelope (2). The closing means (40) is provided with a tubular opening (19). The lead-out wires (18) are isolated from each other and led through the tubular opening (19) to a base (6) for connecting said lamp to said supply voltage through a socket.
