    • An integrated power transmission (10) has an internal combustion (IC) (16) for engine power input, an electrical motor power input (30) and a combining planetary transmission (22) coupled with both power inputs. The power transmission also includes a multi-speed transmission input (14). The combining planetary transmission can be driven by the electric motor input only with a one-way (82) device providing a reaction path for the combining planetary transmission and a stationary power input at the IC engine. A friction clutch member (83) is provided to selectively establish a drive path including both power input members in a multi-speed transmission input. This clutch permits both power sources, electrical and internal combustion, to provide power to the combining planetary and also permits starting of the IC engine while the vehicle is in motion.

    • A power transmission having two simple planetary gear sets (34,36) produces five forward speed ratios and a reverse ratio. The two highest forward speed ratios, fourth and fifth, are overdrive ratios using the same input member (42) in one of the planetary sets and exchanging output members (46,48) in the other planetary set. The power transmission also has a continuous input drive to a sun gear (44) of one of the planetary sets and incorporates five clutches and two brakes to establish the five forward speed ratios. The clutches and brakes are disposed in parallel with the clutch and one-way device to permit more control of the shift timing.

    • A variable-ratio drive mechanism has longitudinally adjustable pulley halves 30, 72 operated by fluid pressure which acts on piston and cylinder structures operatively connected to the adjustable pulley halves. The fluid pressure in one of the piston and cylinder structures is controlled by a valve spool 102 responsive to an actuator 112 on which a lever member 132 is pivotally disposed and maintained in abutment with the drive surface on the adjustable pulley half 30. The lever member also abuts a control rod 140 which is linearly movable in response to command signals. Linear movement of the control rod initiates pivoting of the lever member and enforces or permits resultant linear movement of the actuator so that the spool valve is operated to change the pressure level operating on the piston 48, thereby permitting movement of the pulley half resulting in a change of the drive ratio. The pulley half also enforces pivoting of the lever member and attendant linear movement of the actuator to cause the spool valve to return to its neutral position when the pulley half has attained the position corresponding to the position of the control rod.
