    • A method for processing a nucleic acid sample contained in a liquid comprises:

      (a) introducing said liquid into a chamber (41) of a cartridge (42) which contains a chip shaped carrier (44) having an active surface (45) which carries an array of oligonucleotides, said active surface (45) facing the inner surface of a wall (46) of said cartridge,
      said chamber (41) having a narrow interior and including a channel (43), a portion of said channel lying between said active surface (45) of said chip shaped carrier (44) and the inner surface of said wall (46),
      a rigid segment (47) of said wall (46) being adapted to be swung of a predetermined angle back and forth about a torsion bar (59), swinging of that segment (47) in one sense moving one end thereof towards said active surface (45), and
      swinging of that segment (47) in the opposite sense moving said one end of that segment (47) away from said active surface (45),
      (b) positioning said cartridge (42) into a cartridge holder (56) which holds said cartridge, said positioning being effected before or after introduction of said liquid containing a sample into said chamber (41), and
      (c) swinging said rigid segment (47) of said wall (46) of said predetermined angle back and forth about said torsion bar (59) in order to cause relative motion of the liquid contained in said channel (43) with respect to said active surface (45) of said chip shaped carrier (44).

    • A device for packaging a chip shaped carrier having an active surface which is adapted to be read by an electro-optical reading device, e.g. a surface which carries an array of DNA oligonucleids. The device comprises: a cartridge (12) having an opening (13) for receiving a liquid sample and including casing parts (14, 15); a casing part (14) having an inner surface (16) and outer surface (17), a first cavity (18) for receiving a chip shaped carrier (21), and means (22) which provide visual access to that first cavity and thereby to the active surface of the chip shaped carrier; a sealing frame (26) which is part of a casing part (14) and which is made of a compressible material, sealing frame (26) being connected to said bottom surface (23) of the first cavity (18); and a locking frame (31); the shape and dimensions of first cavity (18), chip shaped carrier (21), sealing frame (26), and locking frame (31) being so chosen that chip shaped carrier (21) fits into the space delimited by sealing frame (26)and a gap (27) which exists between sealing frame (26)and inclined side wall surfaces (24) of first cavity (18), and locking frame (31) is larger than gap (27), but locking frame (31) is however insertable into gap (27) by exerting pressure on locking frame (31) against casing part (14), that pressure causing a compression of sealing frame (26) and a corresponding pressure on a substantial part of the outer surface of the lateral periphery of chip shaped carrier (21), which outer surface is in contact with sealing frame (26) .
