    • A fuel injector of the open nozzle type, which is capable of achieving SAC pressures (i.e. the pressure of the fuel in the injection chamber just in front of the injector spray holes) in excess of 30,000 psi during injection. The injector assembly (11) of the preferred embodiments includes a plunger assembly (7) having three plungers (9,11,13) arranged to form a hydraulic, variable timing fluid chamber between upper (13) and intermediate (11) plungers and an injection chamber below a lower plunger (9). To prevent leakage from the injection chamber, the fuel supply passage (31) is provided, along with the injection chamber, within a one-piece injector cup (5) and a predetermined minimum seal length, at commencement of injection, between a land portion (9b) of an injection plunger (9) and a wall surface defined by a bore (6) of the injector within which it reciprocates is coordinated to the dimensions of the bore below the land and a predetermined maximum solid fuel height for the injector to result in the minimum seal length being at least one-half of the maximum solid fuel height. To obtain an increase in SAC pressures under low speed operating conditions without exceeding pressure capabilities under high speed conditions, some embodiments have valve arrangements for draining timing fluid from the timing chamber whenever the pressure of the timing fluid therein exceeds a predetermined value.

    • A metering system (10) is provided which controls the amount of fuel supplied to the combustion chambers of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine comprising a fuel pump (12) for supplying fuel at low pressure to a first and a second group of unit fuel injectors (14,16), a first solenoid-operated fuel control valve (20) controlling the flow of fuel to the first set of injectors (14) and a second solenoid-operated fuel control valve (24) controlling the flow of fuel to the second set of injectors (16). The system may also include first and second solenoid-operated timing fluid control valves (18,22) associated with the first and the second group of injectors (14,16), respectively. The injectors are capable of being in the fuel receiving mode, establishing a metering period, and the timing receiving mode, establishing a timing period, at the same time to increase the amount of time available for metering both timing fluid and fuel. By grouping the various injectors based on the order of injection so that the injectors from each group are placed in the injection mode in spaced periods throughout each cycle of the engine, e.g. injectors from other groups injecting in the period of time between each injection mode, the system can be designed to permit longer metering and timing periods.

    • An electronically controlled fuel supply system is provided for employing a plurality of fuel injectors which maximize SAC pressures under both low speed and high speed operating conditions and are capable of sustaining SAC pressures in excess of 30,000 psi. The fuel supply system of the present invention includes a gear pump which supplies pressure-modulated fuel to a fueling channel and to a timing channel and from there to a plurality of injectors. Fuel pressure regulator means and timing fluid pressure regulator means are provided in the fueling and timing channel, respectively. An electronic control unit receives information relating to engine operating conditions from a plurality of sensors and actuates the fuel pressure regulator means and the timing fluid pressure regulator means to adjust the pressure as required for the specific engine operating conditions. The timing fluid is delivered to the injectors by the present system at a pressure sufficient to sustain a hydraulic link within the injector of the length necessary to maintain high SAC pressures during injection. Several embodiments of a fuel supply system which achieves these objectives are disclosed. A mounting integral with the cylinder head for an electronically controlled injector fuel supply system is also provided.
