    • The side lasting machine has a shoe support (10) and two side lasting assemblies (16) arranged one at each side of the shoe support. Each assembly (16) comprises a plurality of lasting fingers (46), a plurality of clamp pads (72), disposed each beneath a pair of the fingers (46), and a plurality of lasting bands (128), depending one from each finger (46) and interposed between the pads (72) and shoe upper. The clamp pads (72) are mounted for limited heightwise sliding movement in mountings therefor, the arrangement being such that the heightwise position of any one of the pads in relation to the shoe support will not be affected when it is urged against a substantially vertically ending last wall portion, but when it is urged against a last wall portion which is significantly inclined to the vertical, it will be caused to move upwardly in its mounting. In this way, the upper can be clamped against the last, relatively closely to the featherline, without requiring a left/right switching arrangement.

    • The workpiece feeding means is operated from a main drive shaft which is driven by a motor (M1) in response to drive signals supplied by computer control means, the value of which signals depends upon the value of a signal supplied to a computer control means by a transducer (T) incorporated in a foot treadle. Moreover, in order to ensure that the actual speed matches the desired speed, the rotation of the drive shaft is monitored and any appropriate compensation then made by the computer control means. Provision is also made for varying the range of speeds within which the machine will operate, such variation also being achieved by the computer control means such that, for any given setting of the transducer, the particular feed speed will be varied proportionally; this means that the overall travel of the treadle will be constant regardless of the width of the speed band. Provision is further made for setting, through the computer control means, feed lengths for "normal", "snipping" and "pleating" operations and for storing a combination of selected feeds lengths as a style pattern for subsequent recall. In addition, for varying the feed length during a cycle of operation a stepping motor (SM1) is provided and the computer control means is effective to "phase in" any feed length over a pre-determined number of rotations of the main drive shaft. Any variation of the feed length from the "normal" setting, furthermore, serves to vary the adhesive supply rate by a proportion determined by the relationship between the selected feed length and the "normal" feed length as set.

    • The apparatus comprises a pulling over and toe lasting machine and a side and heel seat lasting machine. The pulling over and toe lasting machine comprises two linear potentiometers (102, 104) for monitoring the movement of the heel rest (26) both lengthwise and heightwise of the shoe, a left/right sensor (PrS2) and a proximity switch (PrS1) which senses when the wiper plates (20) reach a predetermined position in their inwiping movement and causes output value information from the potentiometers (102, 104) and left/right sensor (PrS2) to be "read". The side and heel seat lasting machine comprises two side lasting assemblies (36) tiltable in a direction lengthwise of the shoe, to accommodate to the spring of the last, and two adhesive-applying nozzles (40) arranged to track along opposite portions of the shoe. A further linear potentiometer (146) monitors the nozzle movement, and stepping motors (66) are provided for effecting tilting movement of the assemblies (36). The side and seat lasting machine also comprises computer control means (Figs. 7 to 11) which received the output value information from the linear potentiometers (102, 104) and left/right sensor (PrS2) of the pulling and lasting machine and, in accordance therewith, causes the angle of tilt of the side lasting assemblies (36) and also the distance through which the nozzles (40) are driven to be set. The apparatus may also include an automatic unloading device (122).
