    • A chop saw (10) comprises a table (12), a pivot member (14) on the table, a saw assembly (16) pivoted about axis (18) to the pivot member, a blade (26) journalled in said assembly, a motor (22) to drive the blade, an upper guard (32) to cover an upper portion of said blade, which upper guard is pivoted to said assembly, and a lower guard (40) to cover a lower portion of said blade, which lower guard is also pivoted to said assembly, both about the blade axis (28).
      A parallelogram lever (34) has a pivoted connection to the pivot member (38) and upper guard (36) to maintain the orientation of the upper guard in all pivot positions of the assembly. An extension (35) of the parallelogram lever co-operates a flange (100) on the lower guard such that, in a raised rest position of the saw assembly and in an unopened position of the lower guard, the extension engages the flange and prevents downward pivoting of the assembly.
      An actuator (94) opens the lower guard to an extent sufficient to rotate the flange out of abutment with the extension, whereupon subsequent downward pivoting of the saw assembly serves to engage the extension with a cam surface of the flange to open further the lower guard.

    • A locking device (10) is for locking a first member (12) to a second member (14). The first and second members are mounted on a pivot pin (16) of the locking device. A lever (26) has two cams (25) adjacent the pivot pin (16) between cam followers (22a,22b) and which retain each cam (25) in position. The lever (26) is movable between a locking position, in which each cam (25) urges the second member (14) towards the first member (12) to prevent relative rotation therebetween, and a release position (Fig. 2) in which the second member (14) is free to rotate about the pivot pin (16) relative to the first member (12). Such a locking device (10) is particularly suitable for use in releasably holding a bevel block (14) against a mounting block (12) of a chop saw or the like.

    • A saw (10) comprises a housing (23), a drive spindle (20) rotatably mounted in the housing and a circular saw blade (72) adapted to be releasably mounted on one end of the spindle. The blade fits over the threaded end (25) of the spindle and a nut (26) clamps the blade to the spindle. The spindle is in the form of a sleeve and is rotatable about a shaft (22) fixed in the housing. The bore (30) through the end of the spindle is of hexagonal section and corresponds with a bore (32) formed in the end of the shaft.

    • A combination mitre and bevel saw 10 is disclosed which includes an elongate fence guide 74 operatively connected to the saw blade assembly 20 and pivotable between a retracted position and an extended position in the plane of the saw blade 26. A spring 72 biasses the fence guide 74 into its retracted position. The fence guide 74 may be pulled down by the saw operator into its extended position so as to indicate the position at which the saw blade 36 will impinge upon the workpiece and so as to allow the setting of two fence members 17a, 17b accordingly. The fence guide 74 includes a leading 78, which indicates the width of cut which the saw blade will make in the workpiece and a wider portion 80, trailing the leading edge 78, which indicates the optimum spacing of the fence members 17a, 17b. As the saw blade 36 is pivoted about a bevel axis 92 to enable bevel cuts to be made, the fence guide 74, supported on a guide support 62 also pivots about the bevel axis 92 by a corresponding amount. Thus, the fence guide 74 always lies in, and pivots in, the plane of the saw blade 36.
      It goes without saying, of course, that the fence guide 74 lies in the plane of the blade 36 and, at least in the position A, the blade, on pivotting about axis 28, must not impinge the guide 74. The same is also true of the housing 20 which, in the plane of the blade 36, has an opening permitting entry of the fence guide 74 within the housing 20 when the latter is pivotted downwardly about axis 28.
      The fence guide 74 permits an accurate estimate of the cut which will be made in a workpiece and also provides for accurate and optimum positioning of the fence members 17a, 17b.

    • A saw (10) comprises a frame, a table (12) mounted in the frame and adapted to adopt two positions. A pivot member (14) is on a first side of the table and a saw assembly (16) is pivoted (at 18) to the pivot member. A blade (26) is journalled in the assembly and a motor (22) drives the blade. An upper guard (32) covers an upper portion of the blade and is pivoted to the assembly, while a lower guard (40) covers a lower portion of the blade. A slot in the table permits the blade to protrude through the table.
      In a first of said two positions of the table, the saw assembly is above the table and the saw is a chop saw for performing plunge cuts on workpieces supported on said first side of the table (Figure 1). In a second of said two positions, the saw assembly is below the table and the saw is a bench saw for performing cuts on workpieces passed through the blade on a second opposite side of the table (Figure 2). A parallelogram lever (34) has a pivotal connection to the pivot member (at 38) and upper guard (at 36) whereby the orientation of the upper guard to the table is maintained. An extension (118) of the parallelogram lever has a rack (150) which, in bench saw mode, engages a worm gear (152) turnable by a knob to effect an adjustment to the depth of cut of the blade.
