摘要： A tip (16) for a liquefaction surgical handpiece is described. The tip uses at least two lumens. One lumen (29) is used for aspiration and another, smaller lumen (30) is used to inject heated surgical fluid for liquefying a cataractous lens. The termination (27) of the distal portion (30 ) of the injection lumen terminates just inside the termination (31) of the distal portion (28 ) of the aspiration lumen so that heated fluid escaping the injection lumen is reflected off of the internal wall (33) of the aspiration lumen prior to entering the eye. Such an arrangement prevents the injected fluid from directly entering the eye.

摘要： A surgical handpiece (10) is described having at least an irrigation lumen (30, 52) mounted to the body (12). Another lumen (48) is used for aspiration and one irrigation lumen (30) is used to inject heated surgical fluid for liquefying a cataractous lens. A portion of the irrigation lumen (30) is enlarged to form a pumping chamber (42). The pumping chamber works by boiling a small volume of the surgical fluid. As the fluid boils, it expands rapidly, thereby propelling the liquid downstream of the pumping chamber out of the irrigation lumen (30). The pumping chamber may use a pair of electrodes (45, 47) and one of the electrodes may contain a countersink (100). A second irrigation lumen (52, 235) may supply cool surgical fluid to the operative site.
