    • A disc brake incorporates a fixed support (11), a caliper (17) incorporating a hydraulic actuator and sliding on pins (14 and 15). Friction pads (16) incorporating back plates (42) are also guided by extensions (24 and 34) of pins (14 and 15). Pin (14) transmits the whole of the brake torque from the pads (16) to the fixed support (11) due to an elongated aperture (44) in which the pin (15) engages. Pin (14) is designed to take the whole of this brake torque whereas pin (15) is designed to be readily removable. Flats (23) on pin (14) together with an opening (40) in the aperture (43) of each back plate (42) facilitate disengagement of brake pads from pin (14) when the caliper and pad assembly is swung away from the disc after removal of pin (15).

    • A disc brake and vehicle axle assembly includes a lever (24) pivotally mounted on a sliding caliper (17) for mechanical actuation of the adjacent brake pad (19). The lever (24) has an arm (25) extending away from the caliper in a direction generally parallel to the axle (11) and is coupled to an actuator (32) which is mounted on the axle or on the vehicle chassis (15) (Fig. 4). Guide means (21) for the caliper allows limited tilting of the caliper so that a large proportion of the twisting moment applied to the caliper by the lever is reacted by the pads (18,19) and disc (14). This may be supplemented by parallel abutment faces (36,37) on the caliper and fixed support (Fig. 2).
      Also disclosed is an auxiliary lever mechanism (38,39,41,42,44) which increases the mechanical advantage between the lever and the adjacent brake pad (Fig. 3).
