    • A method for use in controlling emission of an optical pulse from a laser comprises pumping a gain medium (10) of a laser at a rate which is limited so that free-running passive Q-switching of the laser is prevented regardless of a duration of pumping of the gain medium. The method further comprises triggering a saturable absorber (12) of the laser so as to reduce a laser cavity loss below a laser cavity gain and cause an optical pulse to be emitted from the laser at a desired emission time. Such a method may provide for the reduction of pulse-to-pulse timing jitter, the control of energy of the emitted optical pulse and/or for the suppression of the emission of multiple optical pulses that may otherwise occur for free-running passive Q-switching of the laser for sufficient gain medium pumping rates.

    • An approach is described herein for establishing communication between a first node in a first wireless network and nodes of another wireless network. A method of achieving this comprises providing, at the first node, an interface for interfacing with an external network facility, the external network facility comprising a topology discovery module. A neighbourhood information message is then submitted from the first node to the topology discovery module. The neighbourhood information message provides an indication of nodes in the first wireless network with which the first node is currently able to communicate. The topology discovery module is configured to compute the topology of networks to which respective nodes belong based on neighbourhood information messages received by the topology discovery module from those nodes. The first node then receives information sent from the external network facility for setting up a communication pathway between the first node and nodes of a second wireless network. The second wireless network is identified by the topology discovery module as having a different network topology from the first wireless network.
