    • Apparatus 20 for a vehicle having a steered member such as a marine vehicle having a helm comprising a rudder 149, the apparatus 20 including a mechanically rotatable steering device 27 and a sensor 142 which senses angular movement of the steering device 27 when the craft is steered. A communication link to the rudder 149 enables the helm to monitor the rudder position. A bi-directional stop mechanism 90 is actuated when the helm determines that the rudder position is beyond starboard or port hard-over thresholds, indicating that the rudder 149 has reached a limit of travel. The helm can cause the stop mechanism 90 to fully engage the steering device 27 to stop further rotation of the steering device 27 in a first rotational direction, corresponding to rotational movement towards said limit of travel. Rotational play is provided between the sensor 142 and the stop mechanism 90, whereby the steering device 27 can be rotated a limited amount, relative to the sensor 142, when the stop mechanism 90 is fully engaged. The stop mechanism 90 is released from engagement with the steering device 27 when the sensor 142 senses that the steering device 27 is rotated, as permitted by said play, in a second rotational direction which is opposite the first rotational direction. Additionally, the same stop mechanism 90, or an optional steering effort mechanism, can be used to provide a dynamic steering effort, whereby the torque required to rotate the steering shaft 26,26.1 is varied based on system inputs and configurations. The required torque is changed by fluctuations of the amount of friction between the steering effort mechanism and steering shaft 26,26.1, based on system inputs and configurations.

    • There is provided a hydraulic steering assembly for applying a force to two or more marine propulsion units. Each propulsion unit has a steering axis and a tilt axis. The tilt axis is generally perpendicular to the steering axis thereof. Each propulsion unit is rotatable about the steering axis and is supported for arcuate movement about the tilt axis thereof. The steering assembly comprises a hydraulic steering actuator including a cylinder and an elongated piston rod. The cylinder has a first end and a second end. The elongated piston rod is reciprocatingly mounted within the cylinder and extends through the cylinder for movement along a piston rod axis. A pair of support arms are pivotable about the tilt axis of a first propulsion unit. The support arms are connected to the piston rod axis allowing arcuate movement of the piston rod about the tilt axis, while maintaining the piston rod axis parallel to the tilt axis. A pivot member is pivotally mounted on the first said propulsion unit for pivoting about a first link axis, which is parallel to the steering axis. The actuator is pivotally connected to the pivot member for pivoting about a second link axis, which is parallel to the piston rod axis. A connecting member is connected to the actuator. The connecting member includes a portion for connecting the connecting member to the actuator and a portion for pivotally connecting an elongated member to the connecting member.

    • A steering apparatus for a marine craft or other vehicle having a communication bus (22) and a plurality of helm apparatuses (24,26). Each of the helm apparatuses includes a steering device (29,31). Additionally, each of the helm apparatuses is connected to the communication bus. Each of the helm apparatuses provides helm signals (38,40) indicative of incremental and decremental movement of the steering device thereof. The helm signals (38,40) are transmitted over the communication bus (22). The steering apparatus further includes a rudder (32) which has an actuator (34) and a control means for receiving each of the helm signals and which provides rudder signals to the actuator to steer the rudder in accordance with movement of the steering devices of the helm apparatuses. The control means is connected to the communication bus. Each of the rudder signals are derived from each of the helm signals from one of the helm apparatuses which is steered fastest when a plurality of the helm apparatuses is simultaneously steered.
