    • An articulated railroad car for improved weight distribution among the trucks, having a forward end car unit (11), a rearward end car unit (12), and interior car units (13, 14) disposed between the forward and rearward end car units (11, 12). Between each adjacent pair of car units, the car has a shared truck (16, 18) having axles for supporting one end of one car unit and one end of the other car unit. A central shared truck (17) is centrally located along the lenght of the railroad car. Articulated connectors onthe shared trucks (16, 18) join the car units to one another. A hitch for a kingpin is located on each of the car units, and is placed over the truck associated with the car unit which is farther from the central truck (17), so as to facilitate even load distribution.

    • A wagon comprising a pair of end doors (38) movable between a first, closed position wherein the end doors enclose an end of the wagon, and a second open position (Fig. 7) wherein the end doors cooperate with end doors on an adjacent wagon to enclose, at least partially, a space between the wagons. In the second position, the end doors may be partially within the side walls (58) of the wagon. The end doors may also be movable to a third position for loading and unloading vehicles wherein the end doors are entirely outside of the wagon so that they do not reduce clearance for the motor vehicles. The wagon preferably includes a vertically adjustable roof structure (42). End portions of the sidewalls preferably are movable with the adjustable height roof structure, with the end doors being supported on the end portions of the sidewalls. End portions of the lower deck or bridge plates are movable to maintain them in close proximity to the end doors so that, when the end doors are moved to their upper or raised position, the end portion of the deck may also be moved to a raised position to avoid creation of a large gap at the bottom of the end doors. To facilitate transport of automotive vehicles over the buffers (54), the buffers (54) preferably are adjustable in height.

    • Improvements to vehicle-transporting railway cars comprising movable bridge plate supports which avoid interference with door clearance requirements, and improved end door lock, and a flexible deflector for decreasing air flow about the outer edges of the end doors. The movable bridge plate supports comprise a lower deck bridge plate support which is movable between a retractable position in which it can support the free end of the bridge plate connected to an adjacent car, and an extended position in which it may be pivotally connected to a bridge plate while spanning a door track. An upper deck bridge plate is provided which comprises a movable member and fixed member, with the movable member and fixed member in combination engaging opposite sides of one of a bridge plate for pivotal connection thereto. Each of the lower deck bridge plates includes a support member for engaging the free end of a bridge plate connected to an adjacent car, and includes a foot to support provided by the door track when in extended position. The improved lock includes lubrication conduits extending between external surfaces and lock pin apertures in top and bottom walls which are joined by a channel shaped side wall structure, and further includes circumferentional channels within the interior surfaces of the lock pin apertures to, dispose between pin engaging surfaces therein, for distribution of lubricant. The flexible deflector extends inward from each of the side walls where the outer edges of the end doors to decrease or inhibit air flow around the outer edges without contacting the end doors when in closed position. The bridge plate supports, lock, and deflectors all must be sufficiently strong and durable to withstand loads imposed during railway service over extended periods of years, without failure.
