    • A polyalkylene glycol ether phosphate ester, or salt thereof, having the formula:



              R w -P(O)(OH) 3-w    (I)



      wherein w is an integer from 1 to 3, and
         R is an oil-soluble polyether moiety having the formula:



              R¹X[(C x H 2x O) n (C y H 2y O) p ] m    (II)



      wherein R¹ is either an alkyl or an alkyl phenyl group having from 7 to 30 carbon atoms,
         X is either O, S, or N
         x is an integer from 2 to 4,
         y is an integer from 6 to 30,
         m is 1 when X is O or S and m is 2 when X is N,
         n and p are such that the polyether moiety contains between 1 and 35% by weight of (C y H 2y O) units and between 35 and 80% by weight of (C x H 2x O) units, and the molecular weight of the polyalkylene glycol moiety is between 500 and 5000 is disclosed.
      The phosphate ester can be prepared by reacting a polyether with a phosphating agent, e.g. phosphorus pentoxide and water. Lubricating oil compositions comprising the phosphate ester or salt thereof are also disclosed. The phosphate esters and salts thereof are useful as extreme pressure/anti-wear additives.

    • A sequential block copolymer containing:

      (i) a moiety R¹X derived from a starter molecule having at least one active hydrogen
      wherein
         R¹ is either an alkyl or alkaryl group having from 1 to 30 carbon atoms,
         X is O,S or N,
      (ii) a polymeric block derived from at least one alkylene oxide of formula C x H 2x O wherein x is an integer from 2 to 4, and at least 50 mole % of said polymeric block is derived from an alkylene oxide where x is 3 or 4, and
      (iii) a polymeric block derived from at least one alkylene oxide of formula C y H 2y O wherein y is an integer in the range from 6 to 30

      characterised in that the sequential block copolymer has the formula:

              R¹X-[(C y H 2y O) m - (C x H 2x O) n - H] q    (I)


      wherein
         R¹, X, y and x are as defined above,
         q is 1 when X is O or S,
         q is 2 when X is N;
         and
         m and n are such that the molecular weight is in the range from 600 to 4000 and the (C y H 2y O) polymeric block (ii) derived from the alkylene oxide of formula C y H 2y O forms from 1 to 40% by weight of the copolymer
      and the polymeric block derived from the alkylene oxide of formula C y H 2y O constitutes the first polymeric block of the sequential block copolymer and is linked directly to the moiety R¹Xis described. The alkylene oxide C x H 2x O is preferably propylene oxide. The copolymer can be prepared by a two step process in which a starter molecule R¹X(R²) q is reacted with C y H 2y O to give an intermediate product which is then reacted with C x H 2x O.
