    • A method and apparatus is disclosed for generating electronic representations of animated images from stored image data elements with reduced computational requirements. The image data elements may be made available from one or more data base sources (150), and may be of any suitable form from which images can be computed. A first sequence of relatively low resolution frames are computed (210) from the stored image data elements, this first sequence of frames representing animated images over a given time period. A second sequence of relatively high resolution frames are computed (220) from the stored image data elements, this second sequence of frames representing the animated images over the given time period. The number of frames in the second sequence is less than the number of frames in the first sequence. Corresponding frames of the first and second sequence are combined (230) to obtain output high resolution frames representative of the animated images over the given time period. The preferred embodiment of the invention, further includes the following steps: spatially interpolating (421) each of the frames of the first sequence to increase the number of pixels in the spatially interpolated frames, and temporally interpolating (421) between frames of the second sequence to obtain further frames in the sequence. In this embodiment, the combining step (230) includes combining the interpolated first sequence frames with second sequence frames and further second sequence frames.

    • A solid state light modulator apparatus for displaying images represented by video signals. The system includes an array of semiconductor devices (100) having electrodes (300) which extend over the tops of their respective devices. The devices are used, in conjunction with related circuitry, for applying sampled video signals to the electrodes. The resulting charge pattern deforms a reflective layer (14), and the deformations are converted to a viewable image by an optical system (22). In one preferred embodiment, every other line of a frame is grounded for one field, thereby achieving an improvement in the dynamic resolution of the display. Also, an improved technique of biasing the light modulator structure permits operation with better sensitivity and at lower operating voltage.

    • This concerns an apparatus and method for encoding and/or decoding video signals for use in a compatible high definition television system or in other applications. In a form of the disclosure there is provided an encoder which includes means (300) for storing an input frame as an array of digital pixel values, and means (600) for interrogating the stored array and for generating a sum signal (I) and at least one difference signal (X, Y, Z). The sum signal is representative of the sum of the pixel values in a group of pixels. The difference signal (e.g. X n ) is representative of the difference between thetotal of the pixel values in some of the pixels (Ao n , Bo n ) in the group and the total of the pixel values of other pixels (A in , Bin) in the group. The sum signal and the difference signal are generated for a multiplicity of groups which cover the video frame. The sum signal is generated at a relatively high information refresh rate and the difference signal is generated at a relatively low information refresh rate. The decoder includes means for storing the sum signal and each of the difference signals, and means for combining the sum and difference signals to obtain an output pixel value for each pixel of an output video frame. In another form of the invention (Fig. 20), electronic processing is performed to obtain low and high spatial frequency component representations of the image represented by the video signal, and these are stored in a digital memory in the encoder. Output frames of the low spatial frequency component representation are produced at a fast frame refresh rate, and output frames of the high spatial frequency component representation are produced at a slow frame refresh rate.
