    • A lighting fixture (10) with a controllable light block (26). The fixture (10) includes a reflector (16) and high intensity discharge lamp (18) that requires a re-strike or warm-up period to come to full brightness or intensity. A cover member (26) is mounted to the reflector (16) and is moveable between an unblocked position and a blocked position. Movement of the cover member (26) is immediate so that blockage of light from the fixture is immediately effectuated. The apparatus is configured so that cover member (26) can be in the blocked position for indefinite periods of time even though the arc lamp continues to be operated at full power, without heat buildup which is detrimental to any part of the apparatus. The cover member (26) also allows light control and special effects lighting options. Another aspect of the invention utilizes an aperture (66) in the cover member (26) that is alignable with the light source when the cover member (26) is in the blocked position. Different inserts (78A, 135, 77) can be placed in the aperture, or it can be opened and closed independently to create special or theatrical effects including changes in color.

    • A highly controllable way to light target areas includes a primary reflector (34) which generates a defined primary beam (40) in association with a light source (30). The primary beam (40), or at least a portion of the primary beam, is directed onto a secondary reflector (42) which generates a secondary beam (44) to the target space. The secondary reflector (42) can be configured in any number of contours, shapes, specularities, or other characteristics to alter and control the characteristics of the secondary beam (44).
      Various options, alternatives, and features are possible with the invention. For example, a plurality of light sources (30) and primary reflectors (34) can be used with one secondary reflector (42). The surface of the secondary reflector (42) can be corrugated to have alternating segments to direct light in different directions. A combination of light source (30), primary reflector (34), and secondary reflector (42) can also be positioned on a moveable base. A plurality of secondary reflectors (42) and light sources (30) and primary reflectors (34) can be positioned on one moveable base and can be oriented in different configurations for different lighting effects.
      The invention can be used to light a variety of areas, including highways, spectator events and locations where significant control of light is needed.
