    • The invention relates to a process for isolating vanadium as a vanadium compound from a solid composition comprising oxides and/or hydroxides of aluminium, oxides of vanadium and oxides of iron. The process comprises the following steps:
      (i) calcination of the solid composition,
      (ii) oxidation by means of salt roasting of the solid composition with an alkali compound to obtain a roasted composition,
      (iii) contacting the roasted composition with an aqueous solution wherein the pH of the aqueous solution when in contact with the roasted composition is between 7 and 10 to obtain an aqueous solution comprising soluble salts of vanadium oxides and a remaining solid composition,
      (iv) separating the aqueous solution comprising soluble salts of vanadium oxides and the remaining solid composition,
      (v) obtaining the vanadium compound or a precursor of the vanadium compound by precipitation of the vanadium oxides with a suitable cation and wherein the resulting precipitated solids are separated from the aqueous solution by means of filtration.
