摘要： A tire inflation apparatus for inflating a tire mounted on a rim comprises an inflation head (40) mounted to a moveable inflation shaft (64) of a head position cylinder (42) and an assist cylinder (44) mounted to a frame member (62), with the frame member (62) and assist cylinder (44) positioned above the inflation location (34). The assist cylinder (44) includes a moveable assist shaft (68) operatively connected to the inflation shaft (64) by a moveable cross member (71) whereby the head position cylinder (42) and assist cylinder (44) cooperatively operate to selectively position the inflation head (40). The inflation head (40) is positioned in a retracted position (48) by vertical upward extension of the assist shaft (68) and positioned in a tire engaging position (50) by vertical downward retraction of the assist shaft (68). A fluid passage (52) in the inflation shaft (64) may deliver pressurized gas into a tire inflation cavity (54) of the inflation head (40) for inflating a tire when the inflation head (40) is sealed against the tire.

摘要： An apparatus and method for mounting a valve stem (428) to the rim (412) of an automotive vehicle wheel includes rims (412) being supplied in series by a conveyor to a gauging station (414) where the type and/or size of the rim (412) and the location and alignment of an aperture (426) for receiving the valve stem (428) is determined by a machine vision system. An electronic control system (422) directs a robotic manipulator (420) to grasp the valve stem (428), move the valve stem (428) to a mounting station, position the valve stem with respect to the rim such that the aperture in the rim is in coaxial alignment with the valve stem, and insert the valve stem through the aperture in the rim. If necessary, a power-actuated nut runner, mounted on the robotic manipulator (438) or adjacent the mounting station, is used to tighten a nut over the valve stem. The gauging station can use a rotating table which rotates the wheel about a central axis, and an "electric eye" optical sensor directing a beam of infrared light onto the rim. As the rim rotates through the beam, the presence or lack of a reflection of the light beam is used to detect the location of the aperture, and rotation of the table is stopped when the aperture is in alignment with the beam. A probe mounted on the gauging station can be extended to project into the aperture to confirm that the aperture is at the desired position and reposition the rim slightly to provide a precise positioning of the aperture.
