摘要： Two-stage catalytic converters for automobile exhaust gas treatment are known. Such a converter has a housing which contains a reducing catalyst in an upstream portion and an oxidising catalyst in a downstream portion. It is desirable to provide a converter housing which can have a wider variety of applications than in known converters, and also a housing which is more durable and less likely to fail under stress. The converter housing (14) has an upstream reducing catalyst (48) and a downstream oxidising catalyst (50) and between them a connecting space surrounded by a manifold (52) which has upper and lower halves each having a pair of oppositely directed flanges (64, 65) which fit the interior of the housing (14). Between the flanges is an inwardly recessed portion (60) through which air can be introduced to the connecting space by way of holes (82).

摘要： An "in-line" exhaust processor includes a housing (12) having an inlet (20) for introducing a combustion product (21) from an engine and an outlet (24) for exhausting filtered or otherwise treated combustion product from the housing. A first substrate (26) is situated in a forward or upstream position within the housing (12) to filter combustion product (21a) introduced into the housing through the inlet (20). A second substrate (28) is situated in an adjacent rearward or downstream position within the housing (12) to filter combustion product (21) from at least two sources in the manner explained below. Each substrate (26, 28) includes a cellular structure having opposite inlet and outlet ends and a longitudinal axis. The housing (12) includes a first clam shell portion (16) and a complementary second clam shell portion (14) joined to the first clam shell portion to surround and hold the substrate pair (26, 28) in series. The exhaust processor further includes a bypass channel (56) for diverting a selected portion of the combustion product introduced into the housing through the housing inlet (20) to the second substrate (28).

摘要： An exhaust system 10 comprises a catalyst 18 and a cooling arrangement 20 including a heat exchanger unit 22 for cooling exhaust gases in the system. The invention relates to a method of operating the system comprising the steps of controlling the cooling arrangement to achieve an exhaust temperature within a first operating range for the catalyst appropriate to a first engine cycle and controlling the cooling arrangement so as to achieve an exhaust temperature within a second operating range for catalyst appropriate to a second engine system. A second operating range has a higher maximum temperature than the first operating range. Preferably the first engine cycle is a lean cycle and the second engine cycle is a stoichiometric cycle or a sulphur purge cycle. The first operating range is from 200-450 DEG C while a second operating range is from 350-750 DEG C.
