    • A liquid dispensing system and a packaging apparatus which includes such a system has a chamber 6 of a chryogenic vessel 2 containing a reservoir of liquid gas 1 (such as nitrogen, oxygen or argon) which is to be dispensed in doses 26 through an outlet port 12 which is in constant communication with a sub-chamber 17. The sub-­chamber 17 is part of a piston 16 and cylinder 15 device in which the piston is reciprocated by means 21 and 24 to expand and contract the sub-chamber. When the sub-chamber 17 is expanded, liquid gas enters from the reservoir 1 through flow ports 18 which are closed by the piston 16 during contraction of the sub-chamber to dispense a dose 26.
      Mounted beneath the outlet port 12 is a tubular skirt 25 having internal passages 30 through which purging gas is directed into the region 29 adjacent to the outlet port 12. The region 29 is purged of air to alleviate ice build-up at the outlet port 12. The purging gas liquifies at a temperature not greater than the temperature of the liquid gas at the outlet port and provides a back-pressure at the outlet port to restrain flow of liquid gas therethrough prior to the contraction of the sub-chamber 17 to dispense a dose.
      The doses 26 are dispensed into open topped containers 34 that are moved successively beneath the outlet port 12 and means 50 is provided for sensing the containers and controlling the devices 21 and 24 to maintain synchronisation between the dispensing and the movement of the containers.

    • A method of and apparatus for manufacturing a beverage package such as a bottle, carton or can containing beer, lager, ale, or stout. To alleviate contamination of the beverage in the sealed package by oxygen, the headspace of the container is filled prior to sealing of the container, with a froth or foam formed remotely from the container by the (or a different) beverage and carbon dioxide and/or an inert gas such as nitrogen. The froth or foam is fed into the headspace of the containers (15) between the beverage filling and sealing stations by way of outlets (21) forming part of a rotary valve (14). The containers (15) are moved sequentially along a circular path (16) by a star whell; a plate (191 of the valve (14) is carried on struts (17) by, and to rotate in unison with, the starwheel and relative to a fixed plate (19) of the valve. Relative rotation between the plates (18) and (19) controls the valve to determine the flow of preformed froth or foam from a supply conduit (9) to the outlets (21) which are carried by and rotate with the plate (18). Preferably the valve is arranged so that the froth or foam is delivered to the containers (15) only while such containers are located on the starwheel below the respective outlets (21).

    • Gasified beverage frothing apparatus has a dip tube (5) for insertion into a gasified beverage (33) which is to be frothed. A piston (7) in the tube (5) forms a chamber (9) which communicates with the beverage through a restricted orifice (30) and a port (31) having a non-return valve (32). On expansion of chamber (9), beverage is drawn in through the port (31) and on contraction of the chamber beverage is expelled through orifice (30) to be subjected to cavitation so that gas in solution in the beverage is liberated to form a head of froth. The piston (7) is biased by spring (14) to contract the chamber (9). Chamber (9) is expanded against spring (14) by manual rotation of a multi-lobe cam (15). As cam (15) rotates a cam follower (17) linked to the piston (7) is displaced on the cam to expand the chamber (9) until the follower (17) moves over a cam lobe to permit the chamber (9) to contract solely under the pressure of spring (14). Cam (15) is rotated by arcuate displacement of a lever (22) coupled thereto through a one-way drive system (25, 26) so that successive arcuate reciprocation of the lever successively rotates the cam for repeated expansions and contractions of the chamber (9).

    • A method of packaging a beverage and a package structure has a cylindrical tube 1 over an end 3 of which is located a partition wall 2 having a restricted orifice 6. A closure wall 7 is located over the partition wall 2 and both walls are sealed, for example by crimping, to the rim of the tube 1. A primary chamber 4 is formed within the tube and a secondary chamber 8 is formed between the partition wall 2 and closure wall 7 which chambers communicate through the orifice 6.
      Chamber 4 is charged with beverage 11 containing gas in solution and sealed with an end wall 12 crimped to the rim 9 of the tube 1. Prior to sealing the chamber 9 is dosed with liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide so that headspace 13 in that chamber is pressurised. The package adjusts to a state of equilibrium in which beverage flows into the secondary chamber 8 to form a headspace 14 therein. Upon opening of the package with a pull tag 15 a pressure differential between the headspace 14 and 13 causes beverage and/or gas in the chamber 8 to be ejected through the orifice 6 into the beverage 11 and thereby gas in solution in the beverage to be liberated and form, or assist in the formation of, a head of froth on the beverage.
