    • A holding device (16) for holding a smoking article is disclosed, the device being arranged for removable engagement with a smoking port (14) of a smoking machine. The device (16) comprises a hole (28) through which a product of the smoking article (20) may be drawn, and a sealing member (30, 32) for sealing the hole. The sealing member (30, 32) is arranged to seal the hole (28) when the holding device (16) is disengaged from the smoking port (14), and to be urged away from the hole when the holding device is engaged with the smoking port. This can allow a compact and fast acting seal and release mechanism to be provided for automatic smoking or vaping of the smoking article.

    • The present invention relates to a method for making pouches (P) providing a continuous web (18); folding the web (18) to provide confronting side surfaces (22) joined along a bottom edge (24); forming a vertical seal (26) between the confronting side surfaces (22), thereby providing a series of adjacent pockets (28) having opposite side walls with each pocket having an unsealed opening (29) along a top edge (31); filling the pockets (28) through the unsealed opening (29) with material; sealing the unsealed opening (29). In the inventive method, which facilitates handling of the continuous web forming the pouches, the web (18) is perforated by a perforation (46) between a leading length piece (48) of the web (18) adapted to form a leading pocket and a trailing length piece (48) of the web (18) adapted to form a trailing pocket (28), and the distance between a trailing edge (26b) of the leading length piece (48) and a leading edge (26a) of a trailing length piece (48) is increased for tearing the leading and the trailing lengths pieces (48) apart at the perforation (46). The apparatus according to the present invention for making pouches comprises perforation means (36, 38) for perforating the continuous web (18) between a leading length piece (48) of the web (18) adapted to form a leading pocket (28) and a trailing length piece (48) of the web (18) adapted to form a trailing pocket (28), and tearing means (4, 6) adapted to tear the leading length piece (48) and the trailing length piece (48) apart by increasing the distance between a trailing edge (26b) of the leading length piece (48) and a leading edge (26a) of the trailing length piece (48).

    • A method of setting-up machine vision equipment is disclosed, which equipment comprises imaging means comprising a camera defining a field of view and being adapted to form an image of a test object within said field of view, and processing means for processing said image for determining one or more physical properties of said test object, and first supporting means for supporting a test object at a predetermined distance from said camera within said field of view; said method being characterised by: providing second supporting means for supporting at least one reference object; placing a reference object having at least one accurately known dimension on said second supporting means; selectively moving one or more of said camera, said first supporting means and said second supporting means, such that said reference object is brought into the camera's field of view at said predetermined distance from said camera; imaging said reference object to obtain at least one image, and processing said at least one image to determine the optimum configuration of the imaging means; and thereafter adjusting the configuration of said imaging means to said optimum configuration. Also disclosed is a dimensionally stable reference object having at least one accurately known dimension which is fabricated from a ceramic material having a low reflectance or albedo value. Preferably, the reference object comprises a cylindrical bar having an accurately known diameter. Said ceramic material may comprise a ceramic alumina.
